new to 6.9's want to know more

ok so i have a 1986 or 87 ford f350 crew cab dually with a 6.9l banks turbo diesel and its a five speed. But I want to know when to change the oil and do any lube changes. I mean first its been sittin in a field in OHIO!! yeah 3 years about, now i know im gonna change the oil to 15 40 rotella since my grandpa is a trucker. Since I looked around this forum and others but on thing I can't seem to understand is what the heck is a river oaks special???

Welcome to the forum! Since that puppy has been sitting out in the field, spend a little money and get some Auto Rx and run it through the motor, trans and differential. Follow the instructions that are on the site, and you'll see an improvement. Change all the filters, flush the fuel system, clean the tank out. Depending on the mileage and what was done before the vehicle sat up, set aside some money and get the injection pump, injectors and lift pump done. Then get it timed properly.
Change the oil and filter every 3000 miles or so.

I would definetely change ALL fluids at this point (if you haven't already) and filters. I'm sure they can't be in good shape after 3 years.

If you are running 3 year old oil, you need to get it changed. That would be my priority before running it again. Autolites have a bad habit of swelling. Here is an article that might help. Good luck, maybe they won't have swelled at all.

Unless someone converted it. The difference between an 86 and 87 are quite significant. Does it have plastic headlights or glass...probably the easiest way to tell. Can you post a picture, we can identify quite quickly unless it has been frankensteined.

well they are oringinal and they are plastic cuz i broke it by accident and yeah it has autolities cuz i found brand new ones under the seat and a complete engine gasket set and the guy told me he changed it like 2 years ago but yeah 2 years every other day till the ground wire was off of the glow plug controller and he never knew thats why i got it so cheap the first time i tried to buy it but now i did some work on it and he bought it back now im still buyin it for 1200 and NO RUST ON BODY and doors are like new ( the way they shut)i just put some of that diesel restore in the tank i think i ran the 3 gallons of bad out of it and i put 10 gallons of fresh diesel so yeaha nd i did drain the fuel system too i know how to do that thing were the pump stays runnin

oh and everyother day he use to start it and yeah he was mad as hell when he found that out thats why it sat

Pull those autolites and get some Motorcraft plugs. They are the only way to go when it comes to good glow plugs. But be careful when pulling the autolites as they have the tendency to break off because of swelling. If you have any that seem tight hit them with some PB blaster. Some times carbon buildup will cause them to be hard to remove and the PB blaster works great for that. If any of the plugs do break off let us know ASAP and do not attempt to run the engine.

ok i wont ive heard and seen horror stories on here yeah and to answer ameristar1 question on miles it has 15656 original no roll over and the guy i bought it off of said the first owner never drove it he never had time(big mechanic shop) and the only thing wrong was bad glow plugs and a starter slynoid on the fender i need to send some pics if only i had a camerahahaha
