I've transferred fuel twice now.
Once to empty the rear tank before I pulled it, and once when my front tank got so over filled the diesel started puking out the vent line (no self serve at the fuel stations here in Oregon).
Re doing the tank vents so they T together before they vent out to the atmosphere (as I plan on doing in the future) would keep from overfilling a tank until it spills out on the ground.

Do I understand you right --- there is no such thing as self-service pumps in your state ??

I don't know if it was you or someone else, but the idea of using a pump to fill the front tank with the rear tank seemed a little rube goldberg to me, until I discovered where I work that GM uses this idea on some of their trucks. We have a large 1 1/2 ton GM diesel dump truck(has a pickup frontend on it), and it has some sort of computer board that controls a electric pump, and that is how it works; it fills the front tank by drawing it out of the rear tank. The engine always uses the front tank.

This idea seems simple and interesting, but I can't figure out how you can stop the transfer system before it overfills the front tank. As the fuel gauge starts getting near the empty mark, it would be very tempting to go ahead and start filling the front tank with the rear, and if you started too early, the rear tank could overfill the front, unless you possibly could run a overflow pipe from the filler neck back to the rear tank?

Of course the GM system has sensors or uses the sending unit along with the computer board to control the filling.

Didn't you ever hear of a Transfer Flow Tank. I have only 1 tank on my PSD and a 100 gallon Transfer Flow tank in the bed that is computer controlled
to start pumping fuel to the original tank, after I use about 5 gallons out of the original. The computer monitors the in truck fuel guage and tries to keep both tanks FULL -- 3/4 FULL-- 1/2 FULL and so on.

They will let you if you drive a nice car , bike , etc. or if you just insist and don't let them tell you no

When I fuel up my Harley, they always just hand me the nozzle. When I fill the front tank on my truck, I usually end up doing it because it won't even go to the first detent on the handle.
But yes, it's technically illegal to pump your own fuel in Oregon.
