need help

93 7.3 idi n/a 266000 miles i did a compration check and found this #2/430,#4/450,#6/450,#8/430,#1/430,#3/450,#5/415,#7/300 pulled the pass head off and found that the valves are needing work. can the valves on one cylender cause it to burn lots of oil? any help would be helpful

Not sure what you are referring to, but if it's the carbon deposits that leave an irregular surface on the bottom of the valve, that's pretty normal, especially if you've been burning a lot of oil.

Try depressing the valve in question, and see if there is any side to side movement signifying a badly worn valve guide. Use one hand to push down on the top of the valve and the other hand to see if it will wiggle in the guide. If the lack of compression is due to a valve not properly seating because of a badly worn guide, this would also explain the high oil consumption. It is not really expensive to have the old guides pressed out and new ones pressed in. I think the local shop around here charges $150 for labor if both heads are done.

All the original heads come without pressed in guides. They are done only when the heads are worn. Then the heads in the heads are bored out, then reamed to fit the valve stems. So if you have a set of guides already in the heads this has been done at least once before you. No problem... It can be done again...

That's wierd I never even checked on my 7.3L heads to notice but I can tell you that my IH tractors all have pressed in guides from the factory. I even have a spare head out in the garage I could take a pic of, if you wanted to see. The head that I have out there is from an IH 221 Inline 6 gas motor, but it will fit the 263 or 301 motors as well.

Yes... This would have been a real plus in the design of these motors if they had press in valve guides... That and s et of head studs and cylinder liners would have made this a motor for decades of good... Hard use... But... We can fix anything that Ford and International didn't seem to think they neded...

A huge improvement would have been either a wet sleeve or a dry sleeve block. I vote for the wet sleeve because ease of rebuilding, the only thing that sucks with wet sleeves is if the sealing o-ring leaks coolant into the crankcase. It's crappy that IH didn't use all the great things they had been doing with AG and Industrial engines for years on these IDI engines, that would would have made them rebuildable an infinite number of times. I've got an old 42 Farmall A I just rebuilt, and it was it's 3rd rebuild total. My great grandfather bought it brand new and it has been in the family every since. It only takes about 4 hours and you have a brand new engine without any machine work, unless of course you need the head refinished or you done something you shouldn't have along the way and the crank got scored. This tractor has been maintained meticulously and is still STD on both main and rod journals.
