My New IC Idea

I'm thinking about using this as my IC. It is 12" tall, 18 1/2" wide, and 2 1/2" thick. This is a stock IC from a Toyota Supra and a buddy gave it to me. The inlet/outlet pipes are closer in diameter to what I need compared to the 6.0 IC that is like 3" in diameter. Since these engines don't require much for an IC, I don't see why this wouldn't work.:dunno It'll be a lot easier to mount due to it's size too.;Sweet I'd like to hear everyone's input on this idea. I will take pics during the process when I get around to installing this. If it works, and anyone else is interested in one of these, I can get them from my buddy for cheap! He donated this one to me to use as a "prototype" for "research and development".LOL

see if you can figure out what the cfm flow is on it if it isn't at least 800 i wouldn't mess with it. good thinking, enginuity is what we need to make this kind of stuff work and if it pays off it will be twice as sweet.

How would I figure out the cfm flow? I sent a PM to a guy that I was told knows about Toyota performance. I'll wait and see what he says.

i think thats the way to go about it, find as many supra guys as possible and see if anyone knows

I ran 300HP at 15psi through mine on my Supra. It will easily flow as much as the standard ATS kit (which I've got on my truck) in my opinion. The IC piping is roughly the same size, and the core is plenty thick enough to support the airflow of a 7.3

I've since upgraded my Supra to an all-aluminum unit to support higher boost levels, but the factory IC is a good design. The hardest part making it work on the IDI's is that the plumbing isn't really set up for a proper "cross flow" setup that lends itself to easily installing it on the IDI.

That said, silicone reducers are cheap, and if you already have a 6.0 IC it'll probably be easier to install.

Thanks you for your input on this. The reason I am considering this is because it lloks like it could be a major PITA to get the 6.0 IC to fit. I can "junk" the A/C condensor to free up a little room, but I'm automatic so I need to keep the trans cooler out there in the front and can't remove it. I'll take more measurements to see just how much room I have and what may be required to make the 6.0 IC fit.

Thank you everyone for your input. I'll keep measuring and checking what I have for room to see what is possible, and what will require a lot of modification to see what I can make work. If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know. I just thought that the Toyota IC would be easier because of the size. The 6.0 IC will require some changes that will "sandwich" everything in the front. The Toyota IC will easily fit on the driver's side in front of the radiator, and leave my trans cooler right where it is.

reklund... Do you happen to know right off hand what the size of your motor was (in cubic inches) the you were running 300HP and 15psi of boost? Thanks.

Ok. I found this calculator for figuring out cfm needed. According to it a 6.9 (420cid) running at 2,500rpms, and at 80% efficiency only needs 379.77 cfm of air flow. Not sure how much that changes with boost from a turbo. Using the same calculator, the 183cid engine (same size as the engine I have the IC from), would have to be turning at 5,470 rpms to achieve 379.92 cfm of air flow (Also calculated at 80% efficiency). Based on this calculation, I don't think that the IC from the Toyota will allow proper air flow that I need for my engine.

the supras will turn much more than 5400rpm. so maybe it will work, but i'm not sure about when you add boost

The 380 cfm that the calculator showed for what our engines would need is a minimum and on an engine with NO TURBO. According to my calculations (don't know if I'm correct, but think I am) at 10psi, we need about twice that air flow.:dunno The means the Supra IC would have to be capable to handle around 11,000 rpms on the 183cid engine.:eek:
