Loose Driveline

Well little discovery taking the drivelina apart tonight.
Snug rear axle u-joint bolts-not very tight!
Loose pinion nut......Thanks Scott!
Rubber bushing for the carrier bearing soft and weak....Must be that Bronco thing...
Carrier bearing good but getting replaced tomorrow for $38.00 for the whole carrier assembly.
Splined shaft on rear driveline looks good, just needs some dino poop.

In need of torch or larger impact wrench to remove nuts on the U-bolts to realign and snug downthe rear axle assembly.

I am beginning to think to PO had plenty of work done by crack mechanics as I have been digging thru all the paperwork on the truck all the way back to 1997 when it was over in Washington and Canada.

Well, got the little gal back road worthy tonight and man does it feel good to be a little higher in the air.
$28.00 for the carrier bearing and repacked the slip joint and retorqued the pinion nut. All is good and driveline is tight.
For the u-bolts, some Break Away, heat, air impact wrench and 3' breaker bar and with a little coaxing, muscle and defending Goldies "preferences", them nuts finally gave in and was able to reset the rear axle and retighten.

Whew, I was gonna have to cut the u-bolts and get new, but I think what helped get them loose was what Mel was implying...
I just think Lady Moose was a wee bit jealous that Goldie is wearing a mini skirt and high heels.


And Thank You for your support cause it's time for a few cold ones to celebrate with now 2 working IDI's in the yard.

Don't cringe when I ask this, but what is the correct torque setting for that pinion nut? I just went 'till it felt right...which it wasn't, so I put a few more twists to it. So far so good but I would like to torque it to the proper spec.

Was gonna do the same thing but I remembered the Haynes book was close by. According to Haynes, the the proper torque setting for the 10.25 pinion nut is 160 ft/lbs.
Have a big block or parking brake that works. Takes all ya got to get it there.

Well, to drag this thread back up an get another figure on what is going on.
I am still experiencing the driveline vibration. New joints and a ship off to the shop are in store for tomorrow even tho the joints appear to be fine. I have given up!
It seems to me that the rear driveline section, by the way it wobbles up and down, vertical for y'all at the slip shaft portion acts like the back shaft is too short but is at the proper length for suspension travel. The splines look good to me and not chewed up or worn. With this vibration happening, after 500 miles over the last 4 days and 700 miles total, it is giving the new carrier bearing a run for the money and is softening up the spacer portion of the rubber.???? not sure what else to call it.
To make things worse, Goldie now has a squeak up on the front end and yet another vibration. I guess being bi is a real pain in the tailgate. ;p

Ron, When I was painting the new driveshaft for Lady Moose, (and if you recall the stupid things we do thread), I happened to notice while I was down there taking my life in my hands, that you can really see what's going on with the drive shaft while doing that. You might give it a try, and see what kinds of things you observe. You might be suprised by what you see.

I might just try that tonight. I was side tracked last night and didn't get to yanking things off so will give'r a shot. I am kinda curious what's causing this but will be by myself doing this, so big chock blocks and the good stands will get a break out.
Hopefully at slower speeds, I might be able to see what the driveline is doing.
If not and still in the thinking noodle is to send the driveline off to Valley Truck for a spin.
Heck might even be adding to the stupid things ya do story yet.

Well here's what I found tonight with a very shakey driveline.
I had some unexpected help tonight and after wasting a floor jack and raising the rear tires off the floor. I found that the driveline is very wobly and is in need of some attention I can't give.

Here is a pic of the front splined shaft of the rear driveline. Also found was that the carrier bearing had walked back 1/4" Prolly from vibration as it took quite a bit to put the new one on.

Any thoughts as to the blue coating on the splines area?

Also the rear u-joint on the shaft was starting to show some wear in one of the caps.

SO off to the shop it goes.

The squeak found on the right front wheel was found to be a dry set of wheel bearings. Time for some more maintenance.
