Long time lurker, first time poster. As the proud owner of an 93 IDI (going on 12 years), each and every time I've had an issue, I've been able to search up the necessary info right here on this site. A pile of thank you's are owed.

Last winter my starter packed it in so I ended up putting a true denso unit on. While I was at it, I did my fuel return lines and thought it would be a good idea to replace the lift pump as there were a lot of km's on it. Two months ago, I drove the 40 some odd miles up to Squamish to visit a friend. When I went to leave, no start. After lots of cranking she fired so I made the run home. Made it about 3/4 of the way when it died and would not restart. Ended up getting a tow home, ouch!

Got on it the next day and found that the new lift pump had packed it in after a measly 1600 km's. I went to my scrap pile, dug out the old pump and threw it back on the truck. It now runs like nothing ever happened. I briefly considered going electric last winter when I did the starter but I thought "I'll get it next time". To those that are considering an electric pump, don't hesitate like I did.

Welcome to Ob Bernie truck looks nice from what I can see. I hear you on going electric that's really the best way to go. Carrier pumps seem to work pretty well.

Carrier it is. Being in the marine industry, I thought I could find something that would stack up to the Carrier pump. Not a chance.

The lobe that drives the mechanical pump wasn't driving it anymore, so I went with an electric pump, its just a $50 ebay pulse style transfer pump, but its been running my truck for about 2 years now, almost all hauling the RV all over the place.

Mechanical pumps are traditionally very reliable and they last for ever, but the advantages of the electric lift pump outweigh the lifespan expectancy.

Going with anelectric lift pump makes an air intrusion problem easy to fix because the pump is working long before the engine turns by the starter. So you are able to get fuel to the injection pump without over using the starter. That saves the starter and the batteries too. Carrier works so well I could not recommend any other brand pump. They pulll diesel at least 11 ft of head. All the diesel big rigs have these on the refer packs found way up top and front of the trailers. Look at where the suck the diesel from.. Its back under the trailer by the chains and spare tire. That pumps can suck. They last longer than the mechanical lift pumps too. I thought about getting a spare and putting it behind the rear seat.... I gave that up because I felt I would never use it. So I carry a holley red spare back there... Just in case...
