Is This A Fusible Link?

The red and green wire which is the ignition goes from column to fuse box has a fusible link type thing in it
if it is a fusible link it could be why my 85 won't crank with the key only by jumping the starter relay. Here's a pic

Yes... That is one type of fusible link. There are others too that do not look like this. You can find them in the wire harness behind the passenger side battery.

Use an ohm meter and test it on across the black thing and see if is connected. That will tell you if it is bad. Does it have any writing on it like the one in this post?

I have never seen a fuse link with multiple wires on both sides. I have seen ones with 2 wires coming in but the fuse link wire was only one. The black bulge is not the fuse link it only identifies it. The fuse link is in the wire. It is some kind of wire that melts at a predetermined amperage. You can feel them if the are blown , the rubber case will be soft because the wire in it is gone, or it melts apart. If it is blown you can buy them,or get a fuse holder and put the correct amperage fuse in it.

As far as I know...no it isnt a fusable link; it is a factory encapsulated splice/tap for another feed wire off it...

Both wires in out same size...there would need to be a length of wire 1 size down between the larger guage wire in order for it to be a fusable link.

No writing on it looks like a link but like al said is just one gauge wire.
