Can it only go on one way? Or should the engine be at TDC prior to removing it? I am replacing it while the engine is torn apart.

Thanks.

It can go anyway because it uses a dawel to line up with the gear(just spin the input shaft till it lines up). Just have it timed when your done

Thanks! ;Sweet

I read the stickies, but I couldn't find my answer. So I can just pull it, then pull my good spare, toss it on, and have it timed? Am I going to be able to get it close enough to drive to a diesel shop?

If you use the timing marks ontop of the housing. Move it alittle to the passenger side. 1/4 inch at the most

Just the ones behind the little cover, and the 3(?) on the other side . Correct?

The tiny 12 point bolts under the front cover ar 5/16 hex. Those are special hardened bolts too. The torque is 25 lbs. Or as Mel does them... Till his thumb tells him it hurts so don't push any more... The three nuts that hold the pump to the grear cover are 9/16 and might be tuff to reach without the special rotunda tool. No special torque on those nuts either. Just tight enough so the pump wont loose its timeing set point. And yes.... DON"T REMOVE THE TIMING GEAR COVER.... Thats the aluminum half round gear cover that the pump bolts up to. Its also where you pour the motor oil into.

It came off really easily. I already had the injector lines and heads off, so I had plenty of room without needing the special wrench. :D

I bought this engine for the heads, but I am actually really pleased with how it looks on the inside. The pistons and valves are practically CLEAN! I would almost eat off of them. You can also still see the hatch marks very clearly. I might just put the heads back on this block instead of my other one..

Awesome, the only way you mess up with the timing and can't right it is to pull the gear housing and make her jump timing. Other than that you can adjust it easily(not much play but a little move can make a big difference) just by loosening the 9/16 bolts on the back of the IP gear tower and turning the pump as a whole. You should get the thing timed with tools if you have the chance it can make a big difference. That's great you found a happy engine like that.
