Drove about 50 highway miles yesterday, then turned off to go through a town.

When I started from a stoplight.. I heard a weird "ticking"/"knocking" noise that can best be described as sounding similar to a "bad gas knock" or a piece of metal hitting the radiator fan blades (which it was not).

It didn't happen from every dead start, and only lasts few seconds and only taps about 1/2 dozen times.

I'm can't tell if it taps on every rotation, or if it is multiple cylinders.

Is this what an injector knock sounds like?

Almost sounds like a valve lifter going dry. If you sit at idle for a long time does that effect the knock? How's your oil pressure? Level? Temp?
Does it do it when it's cold or only after a good warming up?

Got any weird smoke out the tailpipe?

Mine did a knock from low oil pressure that sounded like this... and it would increase as I accelerated. I mistook it as a fan clutch/pulley. May this assist your troubleshoot.

I have oil.. the level is okay on the dipstick..
It does not knock at idle.. only when a bit of throttle is applied to get the truck moving..
(recording #2 is at complete idle.. at the 2 second mark, is when the throttle is pressed)

Temperature appears is normal, the needle on the gauge is to the left of the thermometer icon (center)

This noise only happened when the engine had been running for a while.
I have not run it cold yet.. I will this afternoon..

No odd smoke out the tail pipe..

As far as oil pressure.. The needle is to the right of mid-point.. on the M in NORMAL
I am going off the oem gauge.. I suppose a 'real' gauge is next on the list of upgrades.

Possibly a piston wrist pin also. My old 302 sounded like this until it threw a rod thru the side + broke piston. Constantly tapped.
