Turns out, the tolerances on a *stock* engine are so tight that if your valve recession is like .010" below the min spec, you will have a valve imprint on your piston.Close running clearances mean that any kind of custom cam has to be setup carefully. I found a faint valve imprint on one of the pistons when I rebuilt my engine. I'm currently running the Typ4 cam and so far so good, but admittedly, I'm not working my IDI anywhere near what other guys are doing to theirs.
After learning that, I'm of the opinion that I want my valve recession to at least max spec, if not .020" deeper - there's plenty of seat material to be removed(because you want as much valve margin as possible for heat dissipation).
And, of course, with a Typ4 or R&D cam, you've got things even tighter.
