I scewed up big time .. Need e40d info.

I decided to replace the trans. Input shaft seal while the engine was out and I had easy access ... bad idea . I don't have a slide hammer , so I decided to just pull the whole front cover off . I unbolted it and began pulling it forward . It would not come all the way off , so I sat and thought for a moment . This us when I realized what I had done and how screwed I am . If anyone could walk me through the process of fixing this mistake I would be extremely grateful ...

ok you pulled the front pump. Did you "yank" hard or stopped when you realized what you have done?

There are teflon seals and the big oring around the pump, if its not damaged you should be ok bolting it back in and then replacing the front seal.

I yanked hard Aren't there thrust washers that have to be aligned ? At this point I feel that it has to come out and be inspected . What is stopping it from coming out ?

the main regulator valve, the converter regulator valve and the converter clutch shift valve which are all clipped.

You should be able to split the front pump control body from the actual pump body once you have removed those 11 retaining bolts.

How far out did it come out? Had you pulled the filter out first? More than likely the trans will need to be completely pulled and stood up on it's tail and carefully guided back together. A decent shop shouldn't charge more than a hundred bucks to do it. There are several seals and rings that have to be installed carefully to prevent damage.

It came out roughly 3/4" . I didn't pull the filter . I only removed the front pump bolts and pulled it out until it stopped . I was kind of ******* it though.

When I say 3/4" , I mean it came about that far forward . It never left the housing. The outside of the pump wasn't visible. It was still in the housing , right at the lip .

Very carefully using the handle of a hammer try and tap it back till it seats using the bolts as guides to set it back in position. The filter is what stopped it from coming out of the transmission. If you get really lucky no damage has happened but you'll have to wait till it's running to tell. Me personally I would pull the whole trans and the completely pull the pump out and make sure none of the sealing rings got scarfed. Someone who has never torn one apart I would highly suggest asking a local shop to make sure it was right. Just tell them you want the pump resealed and they shouldn't hit you too hard especially with you bringing them the already removed transmission. If you were closer we could have it fixed in ten minutes but Oregon is a little bit of a drive for me.

You should be able to push it in by hand. If it is stubborn, you will have to remove the filter and seat the pump. Note you will have to toss the filter anyways it will be junk.
Because you moved the pump just a little, it should be ok.

I used the handle of a hammer to drive mine in too. The seal between the pump body and the transmission case alone can be sticky enough to make it stiff on the way in.

The two pump halfs are held together even after you remove all the bolts that attach it to the transmission. There are bolts that install from behind and can only be accessed if you fully remove the pump. What it means is - don't worry! you didn't throw any alignment off and it should seat back in without issues but DO NOT force it back in! Gentile tapping with a soft object is all that is required. Don't even think about using the bolts to pull it back in either - use them only as guides. It should seat all the way without much effort.

I forgot the most important thing. Remove the input shaft. Re install it after you torque the pump bolts. 18 to 25 foot pounds.
