brought my 7 month old wal mart batteries back today with receipt in hand because they were clearly not working as well as a few months ago. The fellow at the counter tested them and said they were good but just needed a charge so i explained in detail the problems i was having. He was nice enough but did not want to refund them - instead he said he would put them on the charger which would also give them a more extensive test to see for sure if they are bad and it would take about an hour. I had things to do anyway and came back a few hours later, now this guy was gone and someone else was working there. One battery was still on the charger thing and there was all this green liquid all over it. The lady there did not know what it was till she sprinkled some baking soda and realized it was battery acid. They basically blew the thing up somehow and had to give me a refund for it, and while they were at it i convinced them to refund me for the other battery as well even though it evidently tested good so bought some Interstates on the way home with the money.
Anyone know what causes batteries to blow acid everywhere like that? did they give it too much charge or was it related to the problems i was having?
on a similar note, i returned the starter that was on the truck when i bought it because it burned out or something and i found out it was an autozone with lifetime warranty. I knew for a fact it was broke, plus i took it to napa for testing and it would not spin at all. So the assistant manager at autozone puts it in the testing thing they have after muttering something about how she knows nothing about these things. The clamp that holds it in place was kind of loose and she seemed concerned about it - so she gets the thing hooked up, closes the cover, presses the "Start testing" button and ducks her head under the counter as if she thought it would explode or something. All it makes is a thud sound and does not turn over at all. Results of the test: good starter. Sorry, no replacement....
Do these places have their testing equipment rigged up so it will always come out in their favor or what? It almost seemed like a joke, with me trying to explain that the starter is supposed to spin if it works. I remained very polite but had no intention of leaving without a new starter, then finally another guy there said just give him one so i thanked them and left.
I took a different starter to napa for testing one time because i thought it was messed up but they put it on the machine and it spun really fast and loud and they concluded it was fine. Anyone know if those folks at autozone were really that clueless or do their testing machines work different?
This all seemed very strange to me.
