Hub temps

Quick question...roughly how hot would you expect the hubs on a Dana 50 front end to get after 15 minutes or so of operation at higher speeds? This is assuming everything's happy in the front end...

generally,with any bearing/hub assembly if you can hold your hand on them your ok

If you cant hold the bare hand on them for at least 10 seconds.... then something is wrong in my book. They should be nice and warm... but not hot.

Ex. We were told on the RR to inspect hotboxes (B/O journals/bearings) with a temp-stick, then gloved hand, then bare hand. If the temp-stick melted, you were screwed. Then it was set-out time.

How much braking did you do prior to checking?
If possible take the truck on a drive with minimum braking. The slowly stop and check the hubs.

Good point. Braking will affect hub temp alot.

Fred is right the hubs should be warm but not hot. If it gets too hot the grease will drool out the selector cap. I have seen peoples brakes so hot you can't even put your hand on the hubs
