How do you get to the heater core on a 87-91

If it's like the 80-86 the box has a liner which holds your goodies and is removable and then you can access the heater core and it's supply and return lines. I'm not sure if the 80-86 and 87-91 are the same in that regard though. There are significant differences in the dash construction.

Disconnect the heater hoses under the hood. Open the glove box and disconnect the cable that holds it from opening too far. Now it will open completely and just lift off the bottom hinges. Behind it you'll see a plastic panel that is held in place by about 6 or 8 screws. Remove the screws and slide the panel toward you, then down and out. The heater core is now ready to remove. This is one of the easiest fixes on these rigs.

While I'm the last guy to normally do this (I'm running a Stant Thermostat which has been in over 3 years), I went through 3 aftermarket cores in 6 months...then bought a Ford...It's over a year old and working great. Wasn't that much difference in price from Titus Will Ford.
