Hmmm. Help ?

Well a few weeks ago my truck left me chillin on the side of the road. 2 belts broke, which in turn wrapped around the fan and while they were on the fan they yanked my trans cooler lines so i lost all my ATF and 2 belts. Luckily my powersteering went out when i lost my belts so i realized i had a problem and pulled over before all my ATF drained. almost 90% drained after i pulled over.



Anyways. Put all 4 new belts on at almost $100 total after discount on all 4. New ATF and all and everything is good.

Well now my powersteering pump seems like it might be slipping. It makes funny noises when the wheels go all the way one way or another, sometimes itll do it from normal driving and if the tire is touching something itll stop the tire from turning but i am almost certain the steering wheel keeps turning. Thats bad correct ?

Also, i turned the heater on last night cuz it was chilly. Turned it on mix, no air was coming in through the vents and i started smelling burning rubber, turned the heater off and no more smell. I cannot for the life of me remember if i turned my heater on when i lost the 2 belts. My heater and AC was working fine before. What could be the issue ?

well first lets start with the powersteering. i know that pumps will start to "squeel" when they are run low on fluid and usually wont stop unless replaced. I have been able to add fluid and the noise go away but its up in the air. when you go to full lock and bump it against the lock does it make like a hissing sound? if while you are turning from left to right and its just wining the entire way it sounds like you ran the pump low on oil.

as for the heater i cant think of anything by turning on the heater that would smell like burning rubber.

On #2 pull your blower motor and see of anything is in there that might cause that smell.

This is not a power steering whine. This is the first Ford pre 97 i have had that doesnt have the whine so i am definitely used to the sound. It makes the noise once it hits full steer either way and random other times. Ill try to get a vid of the sound tomorrow.

My stepdad did the belts, i wasnt home.

It sounds like a bolt scratching while its threading it self out but way louder. I have a wonderful video but i need to get it on the computer now.

It just did it tonight on a gravel road not even close to half lock. But it is a squeel scratch type sound. Ill get this vid uploaded somehow.

You need to have someone watch it when you are turning the wheel. I would be willing to bet it burned its self up. You probably need a new one. OR, you may have fluid on the belts. The pump takes a LOT of power to turn and if the belts are wet, they will slip. So, if when someone starts to turn it and it stops turning, you are going to break that belt again and maybe get stranded. One way that makes it easy to see if the pully stops is to take some whiteout and paint a stripe on the front of the pulley.

Also, what does the fluid look and smell like? If it is burned, change it and see if it changes. I bet it does not and the pump is screwed.

One way to save the pump is to not hold it at the lock/stop. Keeping them there more than 2 seconds starts to really heat up the fluid. After 4 or 5 seconnds, the fluid starts to burn.

Also if you put new Gates brand belts on be prepared to lose more belts in a few weeks or as long as a few months. Dayco belts are the way to go. they will last for years.

If you weren't home when the belts were replaced, I would double check the tension on the belts and make sure they are tight enough. It may be belt slipping/squeal you are hearing but as stated above you really need to be looking under the hood while someone cranks the wheel to the left and right.....
