I've tried searching the forums but am only finding mentions of olives that assume I already know how many/ where they're located in my truck, and that I can get them from a local diesel shop.

I live in a rural area and the only diesel shop nearby has some macho attitude problem against even talking about a Ford/IH idi. My local Ford dealer parts department is also oblivious about a diesel this old.

This is my only vehicle so I need to identify exactly what items/ how many I need before I start taking things apart in cold weather.

I need to tackle this because the truck is getting very difficult to start.

How many "olives" are there, and which fittings are they located?

Which ones are which size? I found some other info on another forum about there being two sizes, large and small, but I can't find out which is where, or how many.

from other forum on large and small olives:

Thanks!

You have 2 one on each end of the fuel pipe that goes in between teh filter and the injection pump. If you are smart you will go to an injection pump shop and get an adapter that goes from the Oring boss fitting on the back of the pump to Jic5 and then a 1/4" male pipe to jic5 for the fuel filter housing and have a hose made up to go in between with reusable ends so you can be done with those stupid olive seals.

Thanks RLDSL- there's no diesel injection shop near me without macho "we don't work on Ford/IH" attitude, so I'd need to find out the size and type of fitting on the IP's fuel inlet and order fittings from an online supplier.

Can anyone tell me the fitting size/ type for the IP fuel inlet?

Also- I have the mechanical fuel lift pump- are there olives on the lines between that and the filter head? Or anywhere else- return lines, etc?

Thanks

Those stanadyne injection pumps were used for a lot of other industrial and agricultural applications aside from ford/IH, that's where my pump shop got the Orb to Jic adapter from .A good hose shop should be able to fix you up as well.
I'm not sure about the mechanical lift pump, my truck never had one functioning since I[ve had it.

Go to a hydraulic hose shop, as said you need a -5 o-ring boss to male jic adapter, for the pump, a 1/4 male pipe to male jic 90 degree, for the filter hsg. Then get hose adapters and push on hose and be done, you may need a 90 jic adapter for the pump. I am working out of town but I could get all this and send it priority mail to you. pM me if you like

These engine fuel systems have 4 of these olives. Three of them are 5/16 tubing and one is 3/8 tubing. The 3/8 is on the fuel line from the lift pump to the fuel filter end of that line... The filter to the injection pump has a 5/16 on both ends... The last 5/16 olive is wat back on the number 8 cylinder intake manifold port. Its the brass return line fitting manifold just before it terminates with the line running to the fuel tanks.... They are available online too. Just look for midwest fuel injection or arizona fuel injection. A set of 3 costs around $5.00....

Thanks very much everyone! I'll order some of the line seals. The adapter/ hose from filter to IP inlet sounds like a great idea, but I need to keep costs as low as possible right now.
