hard starting

I need some tech help. Now that the weather has gotten colder, it seems my truck is loosing its prime. Where is the most common place for '90 7.3 IDI to suck air?
PS: I'm a mechanic, so no need to spare the tech. lingo.

How are the glow plugs?. I would think that if it is sucking air it would do it at all temps. One bad glow plug can throw the easy starts off. I had 3 bad glow plugs at one time and always needed to plug in in cold weather. Depending on how cold it is getting you might want to also run Power Service or Howes in a double dose. Mine had problems starting last winter. It would start right away then stall. Threw a double dose of Power Service in their and all was well.

It starts fine but it runs for about 3 seconds dies lack of fuel and then crank for about forty seconds and it fires up and will do so all day but after 8hrs or so same thing. the engine has 70,000 on it ats turbo. it is getting to 15 deg. at night high 20s in the day. i have power survice artic express in the fuel so that is good.

crawl around under the truck and look for the obvious if you havent already done that. If you cant find an easy fix then your gonna have to put clear tube in and start moving/wiggling/greasing fuel line sections and contact points till you identify the cause(s). air intrusion can be a headache to find, just keep looking.

Double dose of Power Service white bottle and change the filter. The symptoms your describing mine was doing last winter without the double dose of Power Service. With the double dose it never did it.

That sounds a whole lot like you have a slobbering injector ( or two or more) that has leaked down while parked . When one or more leaks down, those holes and the pump loose their prime temporrarily it will cough for a second on th eholes that had pressure, then die, then take some cranking for the pump to build pressure again and when it fires smoke like crazy for a bout 15-30 seconds then settle out
If running a massive dose of cleaner through ti doesn't clelar it up, it's new injector time. DOn't fool with rebuilts. See Russ ( type4 )for a matched set
