hard starting

dad's got a 94 7.3l "turbodiesel" (powerstroke). its been hard to start lately. mostly when its hot out. has to crank longer than what it useally takes. sometimes it acts like it wants to kick backwards. any ideas?

Could be in need of an oil & oil filter and fuel filter change, could be injector o-rings, could be IPR o-rings, could be IPR vavle, could be HPOP drain back. Next time its hot and not running, pull the plug out of the HPOP and check the oil level. If its full you dont have drain back. I would then look at the IPR o-rings or just a slopped out IPR valve.
