I think direct injection...and what kind of injection systems also help a lot.

One thing...common rails kick **** when it comes to starting. One thing I noticed is most cold starts with cummins on youtube they have slow cranking speeds...do they only run one battery? Common rail PSD's and duramaxs usually start like nobodys business and have fairly good cranking speed.

I have some small pad battery heaters from Carquest wrapped around my IP, fuel filter, and on both batteries. They pull around 15watts each. I have them on a separate plug for all to plug in at once and then my block heater by itself. My tanks also have the same pads. My 94 started in -30 with only the heaters plugged in and no glow plugs. It seemed to like it better.
