Was about to finish up my pushbutton set up for the squirrel mobile and read something about the flat ribbon resistor MUST be in the circuit. Is this right and why? Could you not use a starter sol and a push button? Why the resistor? Will 3-5 seconds of 12vdc fry the GPs?

no the resistor does not have to be there.... the resistor is only there so that the controller and use that to read a change in voltage in the circuit to let it know when the plugs are heated up (voltage divider). You are on the right track.
