Goldie needs a new clutch

Well Since I went Moose, all the parts are coming loose.

The weather has gotten cooler here and the cooler dense air has been GREAT!

The LUK clutch kit I have on her has around 30k on it.
I've been battling a 5th gear slip now for a couple of weeks now and last night after taking one of my customers for a ride, Goldie decided to start slipping the clutch in 4th when she hit 10psi!

Whoops!

So I just got off the phone with Peter @ South Bend Clutch and told him what I was running and the average HP for the combo I'm in and he's looking at a 13" clutch and flywheel kit for $600.00.

Shouldn't have any more slipping issues after that.

Now here's to hoping the LUK will pull the fiver up to Darrins meet without giving up the ghost.

I guess turnin up the Moose juice is gonna have to wait a wee bit longer.

Just how did you manage to wear out your clutch? After 15+ vehicles, millions of miles, and 30 years of driving, I've yet to actually ever replace a clutch because I wore it out.

i replace mine about once a year. mud and sand in the cluch eats em up quick. try and wash it out when i remember.

Just how did you manage to wear out your clutch? After 15+ vehicles, millions of miles, and 30 years of driving, I've yet to actually ever replace a clutch because I wore it out.

This is the second clutch repair in the past 3 years. The first one got the guts twisted out of it on a full spooled acceleration run merging into highway traffic. Got a wheel hop pulling the 18' TT and that was all she wrote once the set of duals recontacted the ground on that bumpy brigde.

I'm not sure if it's actually "worn out" yet, I've got a rear main leak and I fear the oil has found it's way onto places it shouldn't be.
The underside of the motor and trans appears to be a distant relative of the Exxon Valdes.

I'm gonna be off work for the next week and working in the shop so I'll have some time to dig into it a little more.

I'm dreading pulling the trans because of the custom one piece cross over pipe is a PITA to deal with so I'm not really too excited about the repair.

I just put a entire clutch kit in my truck this summer VALEO brand IIRC, i probly have around 1000 miles on it now and since i have the turbo on it if i get on it real hard in second and power shift to third and it keeps the boost over 10psi it slips really bad going into third

The stock style clutches in these trucks don not engage well much past 1500 rpm. Both my 6.9 and 460 with multiple clutches will slip if you try to engage it above that with any sort of loading.

As evidenced by some of the posts here, then I attribute my clutch longevity to my driving style. All my clutch engagements are done at zero power. Off the line, I get moving with the trans in first, and no throttle. Once moving, each engagment is done with the engine speed matching the road speed. The foot is always off the clutch before power is applied. Even the 4R100 in the Moose Wagon is run this way.

what gear ratio are you talking about when doing this?
4.10 and above, I believe you 100%
3.55 and below, I really don't think so.
I have two 3.55 trucks in my inventory and have to slip the clutch on both to get going in 1st. All the 4.10 and above trucks require no throttle coordination whatsoever.

Having seen sheared crank bolts now, it amazes me how those can hold up while a driveshaft can be twisted like that.

If i ease out slowly my 3.55 truck will take off just fine with no fuel really dont have to slip it just ease out slow

175K miles on My OEM DMF. With My wastegate set at 12 PSI. It's just now starting to make some noise. Prolly worn TO bearing, and disc. I inspected it in the spring, hardly any play in the springs. But this has been a tough year on the Old Girl. Lotsa heavy loads with a coupla bad exhaust vavles.


I just scored a Brand NEW, in the box, Valeo 12" DMF off'n Ebay for $350
