When I swapped the 5.9 Cummins into my Ford bus I eliminated the grid heater for top clearance. Now I think I could use some intake heat for cold weather starting, but have no room for the original grid heater. If I drilled and tapped the intake horn to fit a Champion 167 glow plug and wired that in to a switch and relay would that be effective as an intake heater?

Late reply but here we go.

I have done this to a 6.9 before, but it was in a custom intake about the manifold. I used (4) 22 volt glow plugs so I could put 12v to them all day long and not burn them up. They still warm up hot, just not as hot as 11v plugs. If flip a switch and leave it on while the truck warmed up.

My old Oliver tractors only have intake heaters and normally after a rear cold start I'll leave it on for a minute or two. Really smooths out the running and helps warm the engine faster
