Fuel Pressure Gauge Mounting

I have a fuel pressure gauge mounted under the hood, directly on the fuel filter housing. See the picture below.

I think that the placement is not right. I believe that I am measuring the pressure going into the filter, ie the pressure from the pump. What I think I should be measuring is the pressure coming out of the filter, the pressure going into the IP. That way I can tell better when the filter needs to be replaced.

I have three ports I can attach a gauge to: 1)the front port, where the schraeder valve is and where the gauge is shown mounted, 2)the middle port, the return line port, 3) the rear port, which I think powers the "Replace Fuel Filter" idiot light.

I think I should have mounted the gauge on the rear port. I could still retain the idiot light output by mounting that on the 't' currently holding the schraeder valve.

Any input on this?

Ken... You are correct sir... The position you want it where the vacuum electrical switch is located. Just install a Tee there...

Ken,
I see that you went with the clear bubble spotter tube on the fuel return.. Why not extend that logic? Replace the hard line from filter head to IP with some transparent yellow Tygon- just put the schrader valve back in its original position, use that Tee with gauge at the IP supply with a hose barb fitting for the Tygon tube that goes to the the new hose barb fitting in the IP. The new fitting(s) that you'll have to put in the IP has a special thread (forgot what it's called but someone here knows- saw it in another thread). This is very close to what I've done and it works very well. My variation was to Tee off, adapt down to 1/16" nylon hose compression fitting and run the line through the hood to a hood mounted boost gauge. Works better than I had any right to believe and shows vacuum (bad thing) too. I can see it full time so no surprises...

Thank you both. I've changed things around some to where I think they're better. Now I'm waiting for the sealant to cure before I start the engine. I've used Rectoseal 5, which claims to be good for diesel fuel.

That setup looks fine Ken... Only one thing would make this idea better. Thats install a delta P pressure switch or another gauge where you originally had it.
