Fuel injector lines

I have the (Gasp!) dreaded gray-painted lines, and it's been said I should replace them due to leaking air into the fuel system.

Is this common with gray injector lines?

How can I tell if they're leaking air into the fuel system?

What do I replace them with?

Are you talking about the metal injector lines, ir the rubber return lines? Nothing wrng with the metal gray lines. The gray paint on rubber lines, injectors, wires, simply leads you to belive they are original since the factory appearantly hosed the engine down with gray.

Keep in mind I am also a noob, but if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I believe the way to tell if you are getting air in those return lines, is to replace the one that goes back to the filter with clear tube. if air is in there you see bubbles.

what problems are you having or are you just looking for problems and want to wrench on it? - nothing wrong with that I have been known to fix something was wasn't broken yet...

I wouldn't know if I'm having any problems with this. Someone on another forum listed it as something to check:

"If your fuel injector lines are gray, replace them because they're a source of air leaking into the fuel system."

..or something to that effect.

This is my first diesel road vehicle, so I have nothing to compare to. It started making a series of visits to my mechanic today, with a few more scheduled, and I want him to look at everything. We're gonna make the mechanical systems as good as the exterior and interior.

As was said above, don't fix what isn't broken.

Grey painted rubber lines would indicate that they were original to a new or reman engine as the engines are painted after assembly.

As to air leaks, IMO the return cap O-rings would be a much more likely place to leak than THROUGH the lines themselves. The only time I've replaced lines is when they were so badly rotted that they actually broke.
