Found an old sioux valve grinder

not really diesel tec but i thought id share, well maybe one day i'll use it on my diesel

found this old valve grinder in a back ally by the trash so i grabbed it, I could barely reconize it as a tool it was so covered in crap, and some parts were sized as well. It has never been cleaned, so a friend and I brought it home and we cleaned it up a bit then I disassembled it, cleaned it up some more a serviced what needed servicing then painted it and reassembled it and done lol

Don't tell anyone... But thats Detroit Diesel green

close to the original color. at school and where i used to work all we have was sioux valve grinders and they were the cat ass. good job on refurbishing it. im jealous.

and you can still get parts for them from sioux tool co---mine is older than yours--has flat belt drive--i got those from siuox!!!!!! sioux city iowa is the address, or maybe i should say was. at the rate co's are being bought and traded-----

Damn dude, that is a find! That is pretty similar to what I used when I left the machine shop. We had like 3 newer machines, I'd use them a while, give them a chance, the say the hell with it and go back to the old Sioux. They are a little more cumbersome, didn't have the quick change goodies, but if you set them up, they stayed set up! Anyway, you did a great job restoring it as well...congrats on a good find and salvage!

Excellent! My problem would be - not knowing how to use it.

Mel, it's really quite simple. The chuck on the left holds the valve stem. You use the handle on the front to oscillate the valve face back and forth on the angled grinding wheel (on left). The wheel is cooled with machine oil. You set the valve angle and pretty much leave it there. The right side is for setting standing height and trueing the valve end (for us Chevy guys who have adjustable valve trains). You insert the valve into the head (after the seats are cut/ground of course), measure the standing height by using a mic, then cut the rocker arm end of the valve until you have the right stem height. Once they are all cut or trued, your ready to assemble!

All the Sioux equipment we had was orange/grey, just like the first pic where you can see what's left of paint. At any rate, it looks like a top notch restore. Getting all that cooling oil off them was a bear, that stuff seems to stick to metal like glue!

Well, I'm not one to hold to original colors, etc. anyway...hell, I gutted a 67 GTO, tubbed it and drag raced it! Oh, and it wasn't painted a GTO color either!

Hey thx guys ya i still need to find a belt for the pump but i might just get one of thos adjustable belts they use for small drill preses. hahahaha now i kinda don't want to put oil in it because that could get it dirty

and ya 50 year old oil and valve shavings are a ***** t get off
