Ford 9" with a maxed out IDI???

ive seen "fab 9's" and currie 9" in some powerhouses, over 1k ft/lbs.

i have a 31 spline 9" with 3 nodular iron centers with 3 different gear selections.

i plan on building a pretty nasty 7.3 IDIT in the future,

how well do you think this will hold up?

moser axles, timken bearings,
i have a set of drag-lite 15 x 12" rims for the rear i can slap some wrinkle walls on.

the reason for the 9" is for the ease of gear replacement.
like the 9" is famous for.

what are your thoughts??

thinking about building a custom frame with a M2 fatman set up.
thats still bouncing off the pavement tho....
even a straight axle would be bada$$

Are you thinking of a full floater 9'' like nascar uses? I know you can build one to take the power but what about the weight.

What u joint does your 9 inch call for? Might be the weakest point if it's not a heavy u joint.

Also, what size chassis is it going in? An f150 chassis and I bet it would hold up well. A 6 door.....maybe not.

Good shafts and center with crush sleeve eliminator installed should hold up well. The joint size is the same that our trucks run if it came out of a truck. My crawler, f100 and my dads xj all use same u joints.

You can get 9's in all types of forms etc. Pick a heavy duty reinforced housing and keep the center section components heavy duty and it should hold. I've seen some nasty drag cars and mud drag trucks running a 9 with more power than a nasty IDI could put out. Driveline reliability is a function of using good parts and not abusing it. The more abuse you plan on doling out, the better the parts need to be.

Not sure I'd trust a MII under the weight of an IDI. I like MII, but the aren't the heaviest duty front end.

Interested to see how this transpires.

this isnt your average M2, its a nice beafy adjustable unit.
the coil overs would be the only issue IMO.
a PSD only weighs 2-300 pounds more than a BBC.
i think i could get the parts.

this is one of the old 9",s i have, bearing retained.

maybe a full floater, thats a pretty good idea.

center sections are interchangeable still

truck came in pretty beat, we will see what the sun brings.....

weight? what weight? this thing will go on a jenny crank diet ASAP if i decide to run it.

What kind of weight you think You'll get that truck down to? 3500lb?

That MII setup looks pretty slick. What are you going to do about the width of the front end? You gonna widen the MII or run it narrow?

IF i use it, im going to run it narrow. with a custom frame.
turn it into a short bed, with the truck arm suspension
this truck, is going to be layed out on the ground, 3-4" ground clearance.
i already have a work truck and a travel truck, and ive always wanted a OBS.
but i want this thing to **** and get...

i picked the MII up for my 62 ranchero that ive since sold.
and now its in the parts pile waiting to be used.
im going to pull a Waystro and make a 4wd into a 2 wd
i told myself i would never own a TTB front end, and here one sits.....

just something i can tinker on when im waiting for other parts to come in.
as if i dont have enough projects lol

Interesting project. 9" will take way mroe power than an IDI will even make, and take it in a 4000+ lbs car, so a SWB pickup that isn't hauling stuff is no prob. Only concern I'd have is weight and wheel bearings so don't sweat it. Just build it like you would for any drag car with similar power levels. Also keep in mind Bronco and I think F-150 came with 9" in the early-mid 80s. They had the larger 5 lug truck pattern on the axles. It will be fine.
