I’m coming from the IDI world. So pardon my elementary question.

I have 1997 PSD with zf5 trans. Non- modded truck!
When pulling my utility trailer with firewood I’m downshifting a lot more than I’d expect. And slowing WAY down.
What’s the first thing to do for more power?
Exhaust or Tuner, or What do I need??

Truck runs good and all. Great fuel mileage too. Already has a pyro.

Get the hydra chip. (With tunes from 1023 or jelibuilt)
The canned tunes they come with will already make a big difference. Stock exhaust will support over 500hp, but I like straight pipe anyways. Diamond eye has a good turbo back for around $300.
Air filter do a blue 6637, sold by riffraff diesel.

I’m not believing the truck is broke. It’s a big hill to pull with a trailer full of wood. I looked it over. I believe it’s just lacking power.

those are all maintenance items, low power is low boost or low fuel or both. did you have a ZF on your idi? you need to start at the beginning before you throw money into exhaust and a tuner. my 97 was lacking power and my warm up/exhaust brake was not working properly .

What axle ratio? 3.54 and the wider trans ratios of the 96-97 ZF are working against you.

There's definitley better tunez than when I had a Superchips tuner and did resistor mods LOL

Exhaust is a huge help. Starting with the downpipe. I almost pulled the trigger on a quick-spool turbo housing before my powerstroke days ended.

EDIT: you can temporarily disable the warm-up valve to see if that makes a difference. Once you've gone through that, you have most of the understanding of how to convert it to an exhaust brake.

You can now get decel tunes to avoid extra wiring.
I had a quick spool housing with a diy 66 kit. No clue what boost it made. Beat a buddies 6.0 though. Decent for 94.5 baby sized injectors. Lol
Also those were php "canned tunes" from their library.
