Well, today served as a long(er) range test of my 6.9l IDI running 100% WMO. It was 95'F + today and the drive included a 3k foot ascent.

My rear 45 gallon tank was full of oil that was filtered to 1 micron and the water removed with a Goldenrod. The source of the oil was - shall we say - questionable. Might have had brake fluid or other weird stuff in it - no way to tell.

The front 16 gallon tank was full of #2 with a decent shot of DK. I start and stop on the front tank.

My engine is normally aspirated.

I found power lacking at certain point of the journey - tons of black thick smoke - and crappy acceleration. Even if I switched back to #2, although the smoke would clear up after a few minutes of heavy pedal stompage.

This made me wonder if there was something wrong with my engine which was rebuilt 50k ago by the previous owner (I have paperwork). Then I remembered reading the forum about why so many folks bolt on turbos :)

What is interesting is that it seemed like the oil probably separated into different layers in the tank. I would go through times of great power and acceleration and barely any smoke followed by poor power and response and tons of smoke.

I changed the fuel filter yesterday - so that didn't figure.

Anyway I'm looking forward to finishing the last couple of gallons out of that tank and switching to the known provenance stuff I recently acquired and see how it goes. Never again will I run stuff I don't know isn't 100% WMO, ATF, etc.

Dave, tis cheaper like that ;) I'll be trying to pull that stunt off too, once I get my in-tank heaters installed and plumbed in the cooling system.

I take it you guys have access to some rather large supply of oil then! Can't offer much advice, but if I can get a few miles out of my waste engine and tranny fluid, I will keep an eye on this thread.;Sweet

manky--you need the turbo--as the extra compression from the turbo will fire off the extra oil---the oil is getting into the chamber--but without the extra boost--it wont burn---my 94 will burn thru 100 wmo just fine--and ive got it cranked up!!!!! the only time i get smoke--is when i first lay on the pedal till the boost comes on----

I just went to west virginia and back on 100% motor oil and I didn't have a bit of problems. Little bit more smoke on the hill climbs but never saw a power decrease. My round trip was 440 miles all of it was with oil. Mine is turbo too so like said above that might have a factor in it.

Maybe you need less fuel with no turbo-black smoke = unburned fuel.More oxygen may burn more fuel???? And sure the gained compression is a plus.

think about it--more pressure--more heat--more fire to light off the oil--esp in larger amounts---:D :D

I have a question:
If you run wmo in one tank and #2 in the other, using the tank holding #2 to start and stop on, would the wmo going through the fuel return system mix in with the #2? Or would it not make any difference?
