exhaust question

Im sure this is posted somewhere in here, but I will ask anyways my 84 is stock and would like to get a little more out of it and can not afford a turbo was wondering if taking off stock exhaust removing muffler and all and running a straight 4 in out back if it would add any ponies or is it worth it. (I would definitely like it to be a little louder and sound more aggressive.)

Less backpreasure will give you more HP. I personaly think the 6.9 sounds better with a glass pack then strait pipe, but that's my opinion. There are a lot of very cheap mods out there for the IDI motor, a little research on this site will get you far. Have fun and good luck with the best motor Ford ever used!

Going no muffler without a turbo will be obscenely loud and you won't be able to afford the asprin. Now a 4" setup with a straight through 4" big truck muffler would do the trick and would not be too loud to annoy and would have it breathing free as can be

well I unbolted flange for muffler and pulled it back and fired it up it is pretty loud but I think I might try running straight 4 in out back of truck maybe it will just be annoying to others. I know putting a glass pack or something free flowing would make it a little quieter but would it change the sound. right now with no muffler it sounds like a gas engine running straight out headers when you romp on it then when back to idle it just sounds like a normal diesel. I might just go to checkers and buy one of those cherrybombs and put on it and see how it sounds.

glasspacks give it a deeper tone and quiet it down on the low end but when you high up in the rpms nothin can quiet these motors and stay free flow

ok thanks, I might try going cheap and see if I can find a 4 to 2.5 reducer and some 4in exhaust pipe and weld and bend it myself. On all my gas trucks I have always gone with the loudest, I like people to hear me before they see me.

Robert, I think age is catching up with you my friend My truck was straight piped with a single 3" stack right behind the slider window, and it really wasn't all that loud unless I went past 2200 rpms. I recently put the exhaust down like it was factory, only with a 3" straight pipe, and I like it more, but not really cause of the sound level, but mainly because I can now keep my slider window open without sucking in exhaust fumes (I had a big back-draft issue). I've been thinking of adding some sort of a muffler tho, for everyone else's sake, but I haven't found nothing cheap yet...

that magnaflow i got was 92 on ebay thats the cheapest decent muffler iv found in 4" anyway. Im pissed though it wont be here for this weekend its comming tuesday.

TBJ youll have better luck getting a 2.5 to 3 and a 3 to 4"

Ya do you think I would have better luck going to a big truck shop, we dont have much here for parts stores other than checker autozone and napa or maybe a muffler shop?

when i unbolted the muffler and pulled it back I drove it around the block and it didnt really seem that loud I had a 69 bronco that was probably louder. The neighbors probably hated me starting it up at 4am

Can't afford a turbo? "Can't" is an obscene word that should be banned from usage.
If I were you I'd take a loan out to get a turbo. Materials to fab up a 4 " exhaust will cost you $100-$250 if you fab it yourself. Much more if a shop does it.
Check out this site http://car-part.com/index.htm Look up your truck, turbocharger. Allow interchange 1983-94. Scroll down to cheaper turbos and call around. Ask about brand/model, wastegated, crossover pipe, down pipe, oil line, air cleaner, etc. You should be able to get a complete setup for far less than new. Nothing seems to compare when wanting power gains.

well if I really begged and gave lots of kisses I could probably talk the wife into buying me one, but I already have another project (73 ford 1/2 ton 4x4 with 5in lift and 35s) and I need to finish it and would rather save all the begging for it, if you know what I mean. the turbo would be nice but not really needed at this time, but with the exhaust it would run a little better and sound better.

a muffler shop should have them, if not try napa they also have a 4" tail pipe that fits our trucks. if not you can order them online.
