Electric Fuel pump died I THOUGHT

I parked my truck downtown today and when I came back it started right up but then died. I tried starting but nothing. I opened the hood and turned on the key and the pump wasn`t running, I checked the 5 amp fuse and it was good, I checked all the connections and they were good. I tapped on the top of the pump with a screwdriver handle but nothing. I looked around in my bed tool box and found a piece of wire about 2 ft long. I stripped the ends and stuffed one end down into the crimp connecter on the red wire on the pump and touched the other end to the battery and the little pump takes off running. The brand new relay was bad. I left the wire on the pump gently closed the hood drove to Oreilleys down the street and for 6 bucks for a new relay I am back on the go again. Now I keep a spare relay and the piece of wire in the console. I would never go back to that old engine mounted pump for anything. If you don`t have the Carrier pump you really need to get one.

...the original mechanical pump would likely not leave you stranded all of a sudden; when you are miles away from a parts store to get a new relay or some made in china electrical part to get it going again.

Mabye not but the carrier pump won`t rupture a diaphgram and dump fuel in my crankcase either

I have both in My trucks just in case. Also carry an extra relay and fuses and light bulbs and....

The Carrier pump is about the best thing we can do to these ruecks besides adding a turbo or a Moose pump..

I always carry spare relays, and for under hood use, always use the waterproof ones, regular cube relays arent sealed and generally dont last underhood more than a year or so. Best place to get them is Parts express I usually get 10 relays and plug in harnesses at a time, they are dirt cheap there. also if you wire them up with auto reset circuit breakers it can save some headache. that way a momentary water splash causing temporary shorting that would blow a fuse just trips a breaker for a few seconds, sometimes you dont even notice it happened buy a hard short will open the circuit and protect from burning down the truck
