EGT guage issues

At a little bit of a loss here. Finally getting a chance to do some troulbeshooting on the new truck. The Boost an dEGT guages are hooked up to the same power source. Both have power to them and the lights work. The boost guage is happy and working well. The EGT however does not indicate and temps ever. The wires are all plugged in and seem good. Basically everything is connected and I am unsure why it is not working.

Any tricks that I should know about?

In my mind, you just named the only two gauges that don't need power hooked up to them to work.

Well, normally they don't. Yea, if you have the enhanced vision ones, or really fancy ones they may need power, but in general the boost gauge is mechanical, and the pyrometer leads supply power to the EGT gauge, so the only other wires you need are to illuminate the gauges, and those are optional during the day. Are you sure the EGT gauge is hooked up correctly? the RED wire from a type K thermocouple is GROUND, and the yellow wire is the positive lead. Both must go to the gauge, and not share a connection with anything else. Connections must be clean, tight, and away from sources of RF, as the voltages involved are extremely small.

Ok thanks for the correction. I understand that these are unpowered other than for the lights. The lights are what I was talking about for power. I also have an understanding of how a boost and pyro operate.

As for the Pyro I still have a few qurestions about mine. All things are hooked up correctly. I have not had the thermal couple out yet so I do not know the construction. Do these have a wearout method? Can they just up and die? I have a meter for reading K-type thermal couples if needed. I can at least pull the mV with that. Has anyone ever had these fail?

I burn the probe off on my pyro about once a year or more (depending on how many times I hold the pedal to the floor and grin/giggle).

You didn't try trimming the leads running from the the pyro to the guage did you... That can cause issues...

Otherwise it should all work as others have said... what kind of guages are they... they may be bad out of the box.

They are VDO gauges, the look like something that might have come with the banks kit?

Are you sure the guage was working before you got it... it looks like it's used.

Is the probe new or used also?

Sorry to keep posting things for Calvin, but we are buds ya know.

The gauges were in the truck when we bought it. So, we really have no idea. The PO was really NON mechanical type guy also.

Seems like it might be time for a new thermocouple.

Thanks Dean and everyone else too. It is good to know the Thermal couple will burn off. I will get a new one. I think I saw almost 100 degrees today. I am pretty sure that the guage is the one that came with the kit. The truck and everything about it is new to me. I do feel that the guage is good though. Will be good to finally see what is going on under that hood.
