e4od service and coolant service questions

alright guys my 1990 has 73000 miles on it and i want to service the transmission and change the coolant out. the fluid is still pink no burnt smell, no slipping or weird acting transmission issues. the coolant is still green but no telling how old it is.

does the e4od use type F fluid? if so how much for a drain and fill? also can i safely flush the cooling system with water and switch it over to Red coolant or woould i be better sticking to green coolant?. reason i ask about switching to red coolant is a work at a KENWORTH dealership and have plenty of it on hand for free. i also plan on adding some of the cummins dca additive to the coolant.

Please DO NOT put type F fluid in that e4od. Youll smoke that slushbox real quick. The correct fluid is Mercon. The next gen 4R100 trans uses mercon V which is not recommended in the e4od also. Many of my fellow e4od coworkers and friends have used wolfs head super universal full synthetic fluid which is expensive but very resiliant to breakdown versus original mercon fluid. Regardless i drop my pan and filter once a year anyway. As for the coolant i run red fleetcharge in my truck which is also expensive but comes premixed with sca's. The coolant at your work is most likely ok for use in your idi but i would make sure it is compatible.

It should be OK to replace the coolant with the Green and add the DCA to it as long as you have been using it. The FleetGard coolant (Pink) has the DCA all ready added to it for long life. Cost is about $70 to change to it. It would require a complete flush to change.

Never never put Type F in a E4OD transmission.

That statement is WRONG about using Mercon V in the E4OD. Mercon is discontinued but some lube manufactures may still make it. Fords manual was wrong, since has been corrected.

i just bought this truck so i dont know if it had ever had dca added to it, dont know if the cooling system or transmission has ever been serviced either. it was owned by a gentleman in his 80s that bought it new so it could have been serviced possibly. and thankyou for telling me about the correct fluid.
