E4OD one way valve

I took this fitting off of the transmission today and was wondering if the one way ball valve needs to be in there. It looks like it might restrict some of the oil flow and wondering if it would cause any problems if it was taken out. It came out of the back hole where the line goes into the tranny. I thought this line was the exit (it's definitely the intake) or was I just mistaken .

that is on the return line from the coolers, as far as I know it needs to be there to keep the fluid flowing the right direction.

Yes you need the check valve. It prevents the torque converter from draining back into the tranny.
