Hey everyone,

Just curious if there is a dual alternator setup for out trucks? I would like to add a second alternator setup for charge/welding capability.

My one alternator is quite sufficient to charge most any battery quickly as well as boosting etc. 250 Amp powermaster. I now just need to change to a different case for the serp belt setup on the IDI vs my gasser setup.

Any pictures, diagrams or suggestions would be great!

Hydroboost, then run the second alt in the vac pump position. Use an electric vac pump to run your ducts.

That's my plan, cept I was gunna run a compressor head rather instead of a second alt.

Havn't really gotten out pen/paper/ruler and sussed out exactly HOW to make that work yet.

EMS package PSD's have the dual alt capability. you might want to take a look at the bracket to see is you can make it fit on a IDI.

Not exactly what you call an easy to do. I seriously cannot get near an older style ambulance that has a setup like that or I would have. I'm going to mock up something if I can...but dunno...maybe a tad difficult to do..LOL

Camper Specials also have dual alternators. I got it on my 2003 6.0.

One is mounted on each side of the engine.

Want pics?? Might be tomorrow soonest.

As posted.. Amblances had dual alternaters on them. Maybe you might find one thats used around a fire station or resque squad.

You could do it like this- I just centered and mounted a drive pulley on the front of my PS pump pulley & made a bracket that mounts onto the A/C compressor bracket. Shown is a Zena mobile welding alternator with electronic controls.

i think you might be hard pressed to get enough belt to do this, i added a power steering pump to move my WMO on my truck and the IDI diesel has the longest 6 rib belt any local parts store stocks. i got around it by buying a 8 rib belt for a hemi and cutting 2 of the ribs off to get the length i needed. for something that long you could easily be looking into the custom territory, if i didi it again i would lean towards doing what bio has and piggy back another pulley. it lets you keep the stock belt tensioning system as is, unless you could find another factory setup to grab.

-Drool-Drool-Drool-Drool-Drool that's about what I was thinking something like that, I had hoped to see a factory IDI setup if someone had it but that's about right on the money!

Whats the scoop on that Zena setup...any good weld ok? details please:sly

http://www.zena.net/htdocs/feedback/custs.shtml#Top <----- All these people seem to think it's **** caliente for welding, and my buddy the welder said that the high frequency DC that the electronics package that comes with it makes the best welds (I don't know, I'm just a hobby welder). I used mine for the hydrogen system, so I can only attest to the fact that it really is a continuous duty rated alternator that is capable of putting out 150A in the heat under Henry's hood for 5 hours at a time without a hiccup. The guy Tony that owns Zena is the freakin' Yoda guru from hell on things electronic, and can answer any question about any aspect of any install. Don't ask him a question unless you want a complete answer- he doesn't BS, he just reminds me of a professor or a teacher in that he wants to make sure there is no doubt in your mind about the question you asked. Look over the whole site, because what I have is just the tip of the iceberg.;Sweet

Hooooooa-kaaay!

First off, my alternators on the 6.0 are stacked, not on either side...***??! cookoo What was I thinking at the time? On my own truck to boot!

The alternators are bolted to the engine directly, no swing brackets on them. They're stuffed in there pretty good. This set up probably won't work for you, but thought I'd make good on the request anyway.

Here's the pics as promised:

Notice the mounting bolts along the sides of the alternators, both are mounted this way

This is the best angle I could find that shows the 2 stacked

Yes they are, but the brackets appear to bolt into the top of the engine. Never had a reason to take it apart, but to tighten the belts, it isn't a traditional swing bracket on either one. Also, when you look at where it's bolted on, it's on the sides, not the front or back of an alternator tang/bolt eye/hole/traditional mounting.

Nothing on the top of the six-oh is similar to the 7.3, so I'm assuming... I know, I know... that there is a bolt pattern to receive these mounts on top of the engine. They are definitely cradle style mounts though. Very solid, if not annoyingly tight. When I get home, I should see how they're tying the two together, where the combiner is located. On boats we use them to tie two engine alternators into a multi-battery system. They may work on the old IDI's too, no trons to fool with in placing a foreign electric part into the system.

Edit- do you want my VIN in case the thief doesn't know what you're talking about? I'll have to get it later tonight.
