I was just browsing around various parts sites, looking at brake rotors and drums.

Most list two separate drums for a DRW, a 6.27 overall width and a 7.05 overall width.

I have no idea which I have.

Truck is a 2WD DRW chassis-cab Dana-70, not a "dually".

I don't need new drums at the present moment; but, when I do, it might be important to know which I have.

Pull a wheel (well, two) and measure the width of the drum? Heck if I know the difference, maybe one is for the Dana axle and the other is for a Sterling? Did they even had Sterlings in '85?

I always felt rear drums were sold by the brake width. My crewcab srw has 3 inch wide shoes and a crewcab dually has 3 1/2 inch wide shoes. They are all the same diameter... Never heard of a drum being measured like you posted...

I would almost bet you have 3.5" wide rear shoes if it's a dually....My 92 has that size but it's a cab and chassis truck so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

I believe so, the rear in my 86 dump looks like a narrow version of the 10.25 in my 92.

Regardless of overall width, 6.27 or 7.05, they specify DRW with 12 x 3-inch shoes.

I looked at every single listing on three sites and none of them make mention of a 3-1/2-inch shoe.

Between brands, it is a fifty- to seventy-dollar question, with the 7.05 width being the more expensive.

For example, Rock Auto prices, Raybestos part-numbers :

#1657 6.27 overall width $51.00

#1661 7.05 overall width $124.00


Both numbers are for Dana DRW 12 x 3-inch.


So far as I know, my drums are okay, but should I be on the side of the road with one busted, it would sure be handy to know which ones I have.

Although, I have been in similar situations, always resolved by removing the offending parts and crimping or plugging the brake-line for the long limp home.
