Dropped Front Tank - Busted ShowerHead Pics Inside

Let me tell ya, I've read the 'rear tank' was tough > not compared to dropping the front.
Even empty, that front tank WORKED me...the large skid-plate was a bear and of course the drive-shaft had to come out too.
But the tank came out, the busted shower-head was in two large pieces, I sanded and treated the exterior rusted areas with hydrochloric acid, neutralized it with baking soda and water and painted the tanks rusted spots, and added rubber padding to the tank straps and other contact areas (used melted strips of rubber roofing-works great!)

Extended the PU with 'submersible rated' fuel hose but this time...I inserted a section of copper tube to make sure the fuel hose doesn't curl or collapse.

Cut a birds-mouth at the hose end and also the copper tube...it's now about 1/4 off the lowest part of the tank.
Tomorrow, adding an inline fuel filter 'before' the FSV and it's done!

Man, I know i have to drop my front tank and do this very same thing. Think I would go with the pulling the bed route. 6 bed bolts, 6 small screws for the filler necks, unplug wire harness, pull bed. Sounds easier than dropping the tank to me. Problem is I will want to wire wheel and paint the frame, paint the under side of the bed and who knows what else I will find to do. Definitely won't be able to do all that in a weekend.

Careful with the copper, I think I remember bad things with diesel and long term exposure to copper. I'd use stainless for peace of mind. Best of luck Ray, its good to see you posting.

Copper is/has been used for heating oil forever without any major issues...however...I would never use it in a situation where it vibrates > the copper will work-harden and fracture.
And thanks for the kind words...my mind is a wreck, I pulled the tank to give my brain a rest from constantly thinking about my brother...can't say it helped

What years do you guys have that the tanks are so dang hard? I have a 93 idi with dual tanks and the front(side) one came right out. And im with goose. I may not know the problem and I may be new but im a great listener.

I have an 88, the worst thing about dropping the rear tank was rust/debris falling...besides that it was pretty easy. Many say to pull the bed > no way, no help or extra hands. Dropping the rear tank was easy.

I have a tore rotators-cuff on my right shoulder, and health/strength has been an issue...just seemed 'this time' the front tank took more out of me. But it's up, hanging loosely by the straps and tomorrow I'll have an hour or two finishing-up.

Oh, and all the accumulated grease on the skid plate and fuel tank from slinging off the u-joint made things extra messy too!

Ah. i would deffinitly agree that the stuff falling on you is the worst part. I had to cut the straps on mine because they were so bad. Put new ones in and presto. Sorry to hear about your brother. Prayers to you my friend.

So, for the past year I was only filling/using 1/2 tanks...I forgot how much fun it is to put 20 gallons of fuel in the front tank > at $4.25 a gallon
