I hear that, when i moved from CT to AZ I had to ship my stuff and fly, only had 5 days to get out here for a new job. This time Im not going to agree to it unless I have 3-4 weeks to get my stuff in order and get there. I'm actually looking forward to seeing a bunch of the country, I'm the type who still is proud of the amazing landscape this country has to offer and wants to take it all in!

Hopefully my N/A Performs more like devons, after all Ill have copied his intake by then!
I used to drive like mad. All that does is get you terrible MPG and wears you out. Now I look around. I see old mine tunnels on hills in the distance and wonder who found what up there and how did they get all there equipment up the side of that hill. I stop at the small towns and restaurants I used to blow by. Found some great food and learned a lot of History I didn't know.

Arizona has some great stuff to see. I've been planning on going to Oatman then east on 66 to Kingman. Theres some great views out there. Was going to go this weekend but my GF was sick all weekend.

I just remember my move out here from Cali. I was running about 19k total. With my old tired injectors, my timing WAY off, and totally inadequate transmission cooling. Before I burned up my intermediate band, (and then lit the trans on fire) she was not lugging pulling about a 10% grade up hwy58 at about 45. Now with the new trans, injectors, and timed pump. I have to look in the mirror to remind myself if I'm hauling a car. (my trailer w/supra is a little over 5k total)

I'm not saying you're going to win races, but with a well tuned N/A rig, you should be able to pull a measly 5k up a 4% at 55. Especially if you've got a 4.10 rear.

A turbo just makes getting there more fun.

94, 4.10 gears, grossing just under 14k (not a guess, I paid the $7 and drove across a scale).

something is off man.iv never slowed to 25mph at such gross weights going up hill, not even when i was n/a.
i thought you must of been way over gross at like 25k or something.

I've replaced a lot of parts and done everything I feel is reasonable to get this thing to run right, and it does start and run well, but hates hills. This is just my experience.

To be fair, these are not hills I'm climbing, they're 5-15 mile grades at 5-9000 ft elevation. The length of the grade and elevation both play a real factor. I expect the truck could climb them faster, but not without excessive exhaust temps. I watch the pyro like a hawk, and when the engine lugs down and temps shoot up, I down shift to get back to near redline and keep the temps down. I don't know how people without gauges don't melt their engines down, unless they can take a lot higher temps than I'm allowing.

And you probably got 18 mpg doing it, right?

No offense, but there is no way you pulled "about" 19k up an "about" 10% grade at "about" 45, unless those numbers are all exaggerated. Moving 19k up a 10% grade at 45 mph requires 228 hp at the rear wheels, not counting any losses due to tire rolling resistance or wind resistance etc. From what I've seen on rally dyno results, 210 at the rear wheels is an impressive HP figure for a truck in great shape running a moose pump, quality injectors, proper timing, and good boost. Pulling 18k up a 9% grade at 40 requires 172 rwhp, still not counting any of the above mentioned losses.

@TWeatherford

I hate to say it but at that altitude you need turbo + intercooler (heck at 5000' it takes 3lbs of boost just to equal the air density at sea level), also keep in mind that the higher altitude you need to retard the timing vs sea level due to the thinner air (sea level its 8.5-9.5 degrees go a degree or 2 lower then that up here)

oh! that's completely different than what i was thinking.you need a turbo bad up in that thin air.

Ya at this altitude EGTs kill us (I live at 5200, my "test" road goes up to 10000 with multiple 5-8% grades) back when I first got this truck I was running 60 with the egts at 1k+ (held around 1050) while empty with a turbo

Actually, thats backwards, you *advance* the timing at higher altitudes. Some diesels come with altitude compensators that automatically advance the injection timing and decrease the amount of injected volume of fuel above roughly 3800 ft to compensate for the thinner air

No I actually averaged about 8 for the trip, and lit my truck on fire while doing it. The numbers arn't exact because my speedo isn't calibrated, and I didn't go over a scale. Nor did I have a slopemeter to accurately gauge the dynamic grade. But the needle sat around the 45 mark, the sign I'd just passed said "10% grade next 2 miles." You don't have to believe it tho.
