Does e4od need power to shift ?

I bolted my trans linkage back up , but it won't shift out of 2nd. I don't have batts in atm ... ???

Just to clarify , I meant just shifting with my hand , not while driving .

I plugged both batteries in , still won't shift . I'm also not getting power to my gauges , blinker, wipers, Windows , etc. Keep in mind the front clip is not on ..


No power to IP either. I really only have power to the lights and door buzzer. The key is stuck on because the trans is stuck in 2nd ..

the MLPS just tells the brain which gear you selected.it can't stop you from moving the selector.your linkage isn't hooked up correctly or something.
with no power,you'll have reverse and manual 2nd.
whats the truck? what are you doing? an older truck with a c6/4 speed e40d conversion,or a replacement trans for another e40d.....or?

It's a 1990 factory e4od . When I pulled the engine and trans to rebuild it I shifted the trans out of park and it wouldn't go back in . It won't shift past neutral . This was before I .even hooked the linkage back up . It won't budge .. Should I force it ?

You should be able to move the selector. Can you move the linkage on the transmission itself? What happens if you put the t-case in neutral? It sounds like a key/column interlock issue.

Column and linkage shifts freely . It was doing this before I hooked the linkage back up . The t-case is not installed . The linkage on the trans won't move .

who rebuilt it? you? you didn't check to make sure the shift linkage was working while you still had her opened up? or it was shifting freely at that time?
you didn't put the MLPS sensor on in such a way,that the linkage can't move did ya? there's a line on 'em to match up.did you put the updated one on? see the lines on it? i dunno if you incorrectly install that,if she'd stop.......probably.i wouldn't image it spins all the way around 360 inside,but i wasn't that curious as to find out either lol.check it out.

Did something get reassembled incorrectly during the rebuild?

Does rotating the input or output shaft have any effect?

I didn't rebuild it , nor was it done while it was pulled . I just rebuilt the engine and find it easier to pull and install them together . It was rebuilt in 08 I believe , but has 10k miles at the most on it . It shifted through the gears before I pulled it out. The output shaft spins counter clockwise but not clockwise , I'm assuming because its in gear . Spinning it did not change anything.

It spins easier one way cause of a over running clutch one way your dragging clutches the other way your spinning a drum. It being in gear has nothing to do with the resistance since there's no pressure to lock up the clutches. I think I had a issue like this but it was just really stiff to turn by hand and if you really can't move it I'd do what was already suggested by checking the switch to see if it is binding and if you can deal with the fluid pop the pan off and see if it's binding internally. And yes they do shift with no power it's just very harsh.

They shift with no power while driving or just by hand ? I'm just tryin to shift the linkage with my hand into park so I can start it .

If you have no power you can drop it in drive to drive it and it will start in 1st and it will up shift but it is harsh. Both my gasser and diesel have done it and it makes me cringe every time. I had to do one in my 460 truck and I remember the shift lever on the trans being pretty stiff to turn by hand w/o linkage connected. Before you pry on it though I'd double check that it isn't binding some where.

Just remembered pulling it out of park by hand was the issue for me, a couple times I cheated....
