Dealerships against Biosdiesel?

Spoke to a service dude at Ford yesterday. This guy was so against biodiesel and that it would destroy my truck that it was slightly comical.

I know we have mechs on the board - is there a problem with BD? The only thing I can imagine is that old trucks' engines knock loose alot of deposits and screw stuff up?

IF you prep for it ahead of time, it works very well with your truck. All natural rubber or near natural rubber items will need to be changed out. hoses, O-rings, and whatever gaskets that come in contact with the stuff for long periods of time. Why? most cocktails will have akallis and acids in higher concerntration compared to standard diesel. In reality, our IDI's are much more tolerant of diesel fuel cocktails compared to the computerized diesels.

My dad has run it for years with no problems. You will need to change you oil and fuel filter often until it cleans out the lines and deposits in the engine. Bio D will allow you to get many more miles out of your rig than diesel fuel will. I will be running some when I get my truck finished and to be honest its the only reason I bought my IDI.

I think it's pretty funny. Personally I think it's a collaboration between the US dealers and the oil companies. It's funny how the things will be damaged by biodiesel here, but they sell new diesels overseas ( WAY more diesels than they sell in the US) and all diesels sold in Germany for years , and I'm pretty sure the rest of the EU by now , are required to be compatible with biodiesel. The stuff is sold at the pumps at most filing stations there.
This is also why all the new rebuild kits for older Bosch injection pumps are compatible with biodiesel now.

It astonishes me how far behind the rest of the world we are on alternative energy and just about every thing else these days.

A friend bought a new PSD van last year and the dealer told him anything more than B-5 would void his warranty. Sheesh, when are they going to get with the program

I dont get that either. We run ULSD in all our trucks only because we have an account to get it VERY cheap. So in tern buying bio would be more expensive for us, but we've wanted to start using it for a little while now, just because there's so little sulfur in regular diesel anymore that its killing IP's and injectors twice as fast as the old stuff used to.

That's for sure, the killing of the IP's and injectors with the ULSD.... I've driven a few trucks a bunch of miles with ULSD and without fail, i've had issues with them trucks that never had issues before... its bull! I had one truck at the dealer 3 times, but never once did they say anything that the ULSD caused, but for some odd reason, the injectors were going and now they "think" the IP has issues.....ha!

They sell bioD around here, but sadly its the same price as the ULSD, maybe a penny cheaper... Worthless i tell ya!

Yep it is high. Thats why you make it yourself and spend about 40 cents a gallon. Hell I have heard of someone making it for 17 cents a gallon. Do a little research on it and you will be amazed at how simple it is, time consuming but simple. Check these sites out.

Well, having used a lot of biodiesel I can tell you a few things
1) Towcat is right...any natural or butyl rubber will eventually be eaten up by biodiesel
2) Dealers discourage the use of biodiesel because they don't know much about it and higher blends of very bad biodiesel may damage fuel injection systems
3) Its pretty likely the fuel injection system that you are risking not the engine with biodiesel. I have had zero engine trouble in more than 30,000 mostly B100 miles. I have had to replace an IP and a set of injectors in that timeframe, but I think that was more due to a poor build and being repeatedly run out of fuel(don't ask) than bio per se. Also they'll try to discourage you from running B100 because any fuel damage won't be warrantied...well they won't warrant any fuel damage from D2 either...but usually you have a big oil company or at least local distributor to go after. If it's homebrew, you're to kicking yourself in the tail and eating the cost, or going after the local hippie biofuel co-op if commerically bought.

So maybe I ignore this yahoo and have my lines all checked out to make sure that they're compatible with BD and go from there. Sheesh on a 24 year old truck probably could use a fuel system flush anyway.

I'm thinking I might have the 16 gallon tanks in this truck. I wonder if I could fit the 19 gallon ones - just redo the whole fuel system - was planning on doing it at some point anyway...

Oh and BTW had a mech tell me that it had run offroad dyed stuff in the past supposedly you can see the dye somewhere...

roughly the cost per ft is $4. I've been using 4-5ft on each truck for the conversions.

I hate to say this....but I've been running the stock Ford fuel hoses, that hard plastic stuff and it hasn't cracked or gooed up yet. If and when it does, I'll probably just replace it with FI rated 3/8" and 5/16" hoses or neoprene fuel hose. Now the stock soft fuel lines had to be replaced in the first year...they turned to goo real quick.
