Dead C6 help

hi, one of my mates has a problem (I told him to see a doctor) but it turn out its his '85 6.9L F350. The C6 has been a bit ******* 1-2 shifts for about a month now, so he thinks its died. On the freeway some vibration and lost of power to the wheels, he got if off the freeway by dropping to low and now no drive.
Now tomorrow I will look at it, assuming he is correct we will be needing another C6.
So am I correct that any truck diesel C6 unit that I can find in a 'pick a part' will work/fit ? (not too sure on the work bit )

whell.... got quotes of 800 bucks for a used unit looks like a local cartel in auto parts around the Inland Empire.
So in the end one of his old school friends did a deal with a transmission expert he deals with a lot and it looks like its going to fixed and fitted for about 1500
Good for another 250,000 miles.
