the solid axle frt dana44hd and the ttb dana44hd are the same strenth, just the ttb bends a little in the middle. i have had a ttb frt ford for ten years and i love the frt end.

Gotta ttb 44 under Mater, my plow truck, and have been beating on it pretty good the past 2 winters with a heavy Western 7'6 plow on it and it usually has 1500 lbs of firewood in the bed and haven't had any problems so far knock on wood.:dunno

I too would like a 60 under the front of it but tis cost prohibitive and I do like the smoother ride of the ttb front end.

I don't suppose any of these front end 44s could accept 3.07 gears?

What about the break calipers? Normally these trucks have a nice dual piston front disks, can those be swapped over to the D44, or will that already have good enough brakes on it?

Yes you can get a 3.08 R&P (or just about any other imaginable ratio) and dual piston calipers for the D44 ;Sweet

I MUST look into this.....I already have a transfer case, all I need is to hang an axle.

I guess a late 70s F250 D44 front is what I would need, but I thought those were the D44HD, and the D44HDs only went down to 3.54? Are the gears between D44 and D44HD interchangable?

Like stated above I am pretty sure you can get 3.08 gears for a Dana 44 front. And as far as the D44 and D44HD I think the gears are the same, just some other things are a little stronger.

I think you're right. I'm gonna just keep looking for a Dana 60 (maybe after I get my taxes back:D). I do think I'm going to stick with the 4.10 gears too. If I find a decent priced set of 3.73 gears I might consider a change, but don't think I'll go any lower than that. Thanks for the offer to help Russ.

if u keep the front open a Dana 44 should live under most circumstances with tires up to 38" if u know when to throttle on and off. but then again i seen dana 44s crunch with stock tires and just stupidity.

newbie question my 89 f250 has a ttb 50

I'm pretty sure it does have a Dana 50TTB. I have always thought ford got rid of the Dana 44HD in their diesel trucks when they came out with the brick nose's, and they switched to Dana 50TTB's in F-250's and Dana60's in F-350's

To my knowledge, ALL 1985 1/2 4x4 F350's got the Dana 60 under the front. Mine is an early '85, so I missed out on the Dana 60...
