connecting rods

will the connecting rods out of a first gen 7.3 work in a 2nd gen? my uncle is wanting to buy em off a 1st gen his friend is parting out to get rid of those ash rods in his 2nd gen.

Why do you want to change them. 2nd gen rods are forged, much better than 1st gen that are powdered metal. Used forged rods when the turbo was added. Yeah they will fit but the engine balance will be off, forged are heaver. Rods are matched to the piston weight.

from what I have found 7.3 88 to 94 idi non turbo are forged, rist pin 1.110. 93 94 idi turbo rods are forged, 1.307 rist pin. 94.5 to 99.5 psd are forged, 1.307 rist pin. 99.5 to 2003 psd powdered metal 1.307 rist pin. some forged rods found there way into some engines in 2000 to use up stock on hand.

1st gen 7.3 powerstroke = forged connecting rods, 2nd gen = ash (powdered) connecting rods. My uncle has an 01 excursion that he wants to build the engine on but the connecting rods are the limiting factor right now.

Thank you racer30, I'm thinking since the wrist pins are the same size and its the same displacement the connecting rods should be the same size. I'm gonna do a little more research though, I dont wanna tell him to buy something that wont work.

i have read on other sites where guys are putting in forged rods into their later psd's that originally came with powdered rods. maybe they have to change over cranks..... i didnt think so, though.

alright, thanks for the info guys. he'll be looking elsewhere for rods, he doesn't wanna try changing cranks

2000.5 and up is powder puff rods everything below that is forged

YES YES YES. you can swap in 94.5-mid01 forged rods in place of mid01-03 PMRs. direct bolt in.

But i would check ad see that he definatly has PMRs. There is a production date cut off.
Start of production through 1425746 are forged
1425747 through 1440712 are PMR
1446713 through 1498318 are forged
1498319 through final production run are all powdered metal

Also there is a plug in the side of the block you can look in or while changing the oil you can look up the drain hole.
Forged rods have studs and nuts.
PMRs have bolts

there is nothing wrong with PMRs until ya get 350+ hp
PMRS will shatter where forged will bend.
the biggest failure of PMRs is drugs and to much timing
