clunk

I hear this loud 'clunk' when driving in uneven dirt roads, comes from the front I believe. I heard it is normal once in a while but I'd like to know what is it exactly.

I have that same clunk, clang, and rattle. Im used it it now, nothing fell off yet.

Nope, no rattle on mine just the clunk when I drive on dirt roads and hit uneven part of it like a bump but never happens on asphalt roads.

Same thing here, on that. I am not sure what it is, i beleive its a bushing somewhere wore out. onthing i can think it could be. You 4x4 or 2wd?

4x2 but I replaced the bushings and it didn't change anything.

I have the exact same clunk. I assume its a bushing. I have replaced my shocks with no change.

i cannot rememeber what there called (radius arm bushings) but i think it's probably the bushings that go from the front end to the frame there cheap but a PIA to change

I can change my radius-arm bushings in a matter of minutes; it takes longer to find the tools than to change them.



Many years ago, when my truck was up on the hoist at the Ford garage, the mechanic pointed out that I was in need of them.

I told him to go ahead while I was already there, so he fired up a torch, burned out the rivets, replaced the bushings, then replaced the rivets with Grade-8 bolts.


Since then, I have probably replaced them five more times (it IS a half-a-million-mile truck and counting).

I have not noticed any negative issues with the rivets being replaced with bolts.



I couldn't imagine what kind of hassle the job would be without cutting away those rivets.

Its not too bad, takes a few steps longer there midnight. SOmepeople get all sorts of mad when i get the torch out. I think its that axle pivit bushing, i mean the 4x2 and 4x4 both have them dont they????

I replaced the radius arm and pivot bushings already, that is why I thought it should go away.

Pay special attention to the lower ones, they are the ones that usually go bad IIRC. I have at least one worn, lower on the driver side, obviously I'm gonna replace both sides, but tis just too damn cold now, and she ain't fitting in the garage even if I pull the Lincoln outta there. I get that random clunk as well, which lead me to the ball joints.
