I'm driving my new to me 93 diesel crew dually 5 speed 4x4. The volt meter is moving a bit back and forth and hen check engine light on. I pull over and turn her off,... I turn back on and engine light is now off. Other scenarios are when cruse controll is on suddenly it will go off and then volt meeter has gone wacky again, lights are flickering, AC cluch will no longer engage for a bit then come back on again in a bit. All happen at the same time volt meter is acting up. I have changed battery terminals to soldier on type, changed battery, changed alternator, looked for loose wires. nothing has gotten better.

My question is, is there a known problem with these years and the ecu ( computer )? Is there a fix all for this prob? As in the old Chrysler voltage regulator that looked like a chrome box about the size of a deck of cards? I had a 92 dodge that had this box in it in place of the stock computer and it did great. The volt meter never moved at all even when the turn signals were used.

Does any body know what I am talking about or know where to go from here? I am 1000 miles from home and need to pull a load back to Vegas. Any body know how to wire this external regulator?

Sure the gp relay isnt still running? thats what mine was doing until I changed the controler for the gp's

edit: to elaberate on this.

The GP relay was continiously clikcing on and off, when it would click on my charging guage would drop, when it clicked off, it would raise. If I turned my headlights on they went bright/dime aswell. The gp's were pulling alot of juice from the batteries and the alt wasnt keeping up.

Pop the hood and see if you can hear the GP relay clicking when its running.

You have no ECU on that thing, so to answer that question, no , there are no known issues with it :D

Kind of sounds like your wires are shorting out inside the wire harness. Probably ought to look your wire harness over very carefully and look for disintegrating insulation.

I replaced my alt and my external regulator when mind did it, didnt change a thing. The new GP controller fixed it all. I still bet on that.

what is a gp controller? and I did trace it to a problem short in the computer. it's on the driver side fender well. I move it and it shorts the charging. When I slightly bend the computer board it charges fine. ??????????????

there is some sort of computer on the driver side fender well. It has some cooling fins and the controll board is set in a clear se through gell like composit.
