Thanks for the link :) I see the one with the shock is even more expensive!

Rock Auto shows that Motorcraft BT-33 tensioner is for an earlier van, but 94-up F250. Obviously it fits because it's on there now... also it's $106 shipped.

I bought the enclosed non-shock version at O'Reilly for a whopping $92 since they had it... unfortunately the mounting bolt is a different style and length. The new one looks like it's supposed to have some kind of thrust washer or bearing under the head of the bolt, or at least a shoulder bolt to prevent clamping the two halves of the tensioner. And it's counterbored a good 3/4" into the front half, too.

My existing mounting bolt has a cone-shaped area under the head, and the opening in what I think is a thrust plate is also tapered to match it. So I took the new tensioner back.

Incidentally, that mounting bolt was grossly over-tightened, which was probably causing binding in the tensioner mechanism. It always seemed to take a lot of force to "spring" the tensioner when removing or installing the belt...

Anyhow - I was able to free up the thrust plate (thought it unscrewed, but it just goes round and round and is apparently staked in place). I gave it a good soaking with spray "Chain & Cable Fluid", dried the excess and put it back on the truck. That was an interesting exercise getting everything lined up properly including the top shock bolt. I finally got everything back on and immediately noticed that I did not have to lean on the breaker bar to get the tensioner all the way slack. Easier to get the belt over the alternator pulley, too.

When revving the engine and letting it decelerate abruptly, I can really see the tensioner move now... and best of all, no more chirp! :Thumbs Up

I'm not sure how long my temporary lube job will last, but at this point I suspect the bigger
problem was the gorilla who overtorqued the tensioner mounting bolt. :backoff

At least he didn't break it off in the bracket... anyway if the chirp comes back I'll spend the $106.

Me too, and thanks for your suggestion... I was running out of things to replace ;)

I searched online and found a new Motorcraft BT-33 for $75 shipped, so I ordered that. Guaranteeing that the old one will never chirp again :D

Well, the old one got noisy after an hour of run time... and the new tensioner arrived today and I put it on. Swapped its plastic tensioner pulley for the new Gates metal pulley I'd recently installed. Everything quiet...

For about 2 hours run time. Then it started chirping again on rapid decel (upshifts). :frustrate
After getting home I looked at the belt alignment and the a/c compressor needed to be shifted forward as far as its four mounting bolts would allow (about 1/8"). I had just rebuilt the alternator yesterday, so will check its alignment too.

The belt says 6K1110 on it, which I assume is a six-groove 111" belt. The tensioner has to be compressed basically all the way before it will slip over the alternator pulley. Do I have too short a belt and the increased tension is causing problems?
:dunno

Edit: A friend pointed out to me that since the used 6K1110 is quite tight, if I get a new one it will likely be too tight to even put on. So I ordered a Gates 6K1115 from Rock Auto and will see what that does...

On the front of the tensioner is the belt guide scale. Its a pointer that moves telling you your in the right area for correct fit. Sadly most have no idea what this scale is or how to use it. My guess now is the belt is the wrong length but will see later...

Did you replace the belt with the tensioner or reuse the previous one? My tensioner had issues stretching belts out, so that could be your squeak right there. Look up my thread “two month routine squeak”

Same belt. As I mentioned, it requires complete compression of the tensioner to the stop in order to get it on over the alternator pulley, so I doubt it's stretched out. I ordered a new belt 0.5" longer.

Will search for that thread, thanks.
