cab lights

Ok my new truck is ....well... naked...no cab lights and i hate that. I have some cab lights off of a brick nose dually. Will they work on my 92 f250? and is there some kind of template to go by so they are in the right spot? Im not sure on how they hook up either... Thanks Tim

There are legal requirements for larger vehicles, but pickups aren't held to the standard. On a heavy vehicle (semi for example) they are actually two sets of lights, the middle three are clearance lights, the outer two are running lights. That's why they are grouped in the middle and some distance to the outer ones.

Ford just chose to space them evenly, like they were on my '92 F350.

I think I have the requirements somewhere, but as far as exactly where Ford put them, dunno, you might have to measure someone's truck

Here's what I have, what they call identification lights is what I called clearance lights. And what I called running lights they called clearance lights. I'm all mixed up! :

That's a pretty good sized job to add those lights. You would have to remove the headliner part way up front to run the wiring up thru the A pillar, then across to the lights where you drilled the holes for the wire. some lights have two wires, others just use the mounting screws for the Grd. (Neg). Some lights have a closed cell foam pad for sealing, use clear RTV to seal if no pads. Hook the wire thru a relay powered from the parking lights. The headlight switch is overloaded on these trucks already. You can get three way crimp connectors to hookup. Have fun.

You really don't need lights, unless your towing a RV trailer.

Don't need to drop or remove the headliner, at least I didn't in mine. I got some off of a junked OBS and installed them in an afternoon. The worst part is getting the holes all marked out and arranging them where you want them. Once the holes are drilled, the TOP wiring is easy. The only trick spot is running it down the a-pillar, but even that wasn't too bad.

I think the cab roofs are the same. Can't speak for the A-pilar or headliner for the wiring but I would guess they are similar.

You can remove the cargo light to help with fishing wires.

Any cab lights will work, there is no special mount for them, they just screw in. You can even use the ones off the rig in your avatar.

The connector is under the ps kick panel, probably have a open plug there if you look. Harness runs down that side. Not a great pic but how the oem ones mounted etc.

Thanks Leeland.....somebody told me it wouldn't work so i will remove the kick panel and see....said the plug was different for each body style.....sounded crazy to me...

They are correct the plug style is different on 92-97's than 87-91. 81-91 is brown , 92-97 is gray... The wire colors are the same, just clip it off and use butt connectors and & heat shrink tubing.. I just put a new set from ford on my 94

Actually, the rule is that any vehicle over 80 inches wide is required to have them. That's why all DRW pickups have clearance lights on the cab, along with red clearance lights in the back immediately under the tailgate...for that matter, the F-150 Raptor and GM C/K 1500's with Quadra-Steer have clearance lights as well. Cab-mounted clearance lights were optional on SRW pickups, for people who liked the look and for people towing wide trailers that might not have forward clearance lights (boat trailers, for example).
