Hi Gang!
What is everyone using? Is a full synthetic worth it? If so, what do you suggest?
Many thanks...

Dextron-lll/mercon ATF
Or
“Type F” (ATF oil that has more zinc )
Anything Mercon/Dexron or Mercon V is fine for the E4. Mobil 1 is a good choice for a synthetic.
Is the Mobil 1 worth the money? Much better thermal resistance? I'm about to install a updated rebuilt tranny. I bought it from a member here, he had it rebuilt and then wrecked the truck a few years after. It's been sitting for a two years, I've got a rebuilt HD torque converter to go in as well. Question: should I drop the pan and replace the filter? It's got a Mag-Tech pan w/ a drain plug, so I can just dump the fluid. I've read about the filters coming loose and the fix is to retrofit some clips. What's needed to do the filter service? 17 quarts of fluid is what's needed, correct?Anything Mercon/Dexron or Mercon V is fine for the E4. Mobil 1 is a good choice for a synthetic.
It's been a long time since I've seen any Hy Trans, but it seems like it's thicker than ATF. If it is, it seems like it may cause trouble in cold weather. I may be wrong of that though.Hey Speeder,
I read something once and wanted your opinion. Someone was talking about fluids and making an E4OD/4r100 last longer. They said their "transmission guy" only used John Deere HyGard or IH HyTran in the E4/4r transmissions. They said they used it in their transmission, and it seemed to work well, shifted nicely and the transmission lasted a long time. I know that HyGard/HyTrans are some EXCELLENT fluids for what they are used for (tractor transmission (shuttle shift deere, and hydro IH) and hydraulic system). I pretty much dismissed it as internet lore, but I did wonder.
***PLEASE NOTE: I am asking a curiosity question, I'm not recommending the use of HyTran/HyGard in your truck!!!***

It is. Lots of guys run it because of that. Apparently it makes the torque converter "tighter" from what I've read.
Good, so I wasnt crazy thinking I read that somewhere. I think HyTran is a bit thicker that ATF, but not by much. I know a few drips can make a spot bigger than a Cub Cadet...... I've never seen HyGard, I only deal with the IH stuff.... it's what all the IH Cub Cadet Hydro's (and gear drive's) use.
Just got off the phone with the guy who built the transmission. I'm pretty confident that he knows what he is talking about.

He said that the mag tech pan has a leg to support the filter and that Mercon V is the preferred fluid. Also said that synthetic is not needed. I'd would be better off with more frequent fluid changes. 21 quarts with the converter.
Yes it is.So is the general consensus still mercon V is ok for the E40D?
