The belt tensioner on my 92 7.3 has the open spring design. It looks like a replacement. It bounces as the belt turns. Is this normal ? Tension on the belt is fine.

I also wanted to ask about the bolts on the tensioner and idler. I think the tensioner assembly bolt is RH thread and the idler pulley is LH thread. Is that correct? The belt direction is LH on the tensioner pulley so it would be LH thread as well?

The threads are the same on both pulleys, just the normal direction.
The tensioner is a crap design, mine bounces also.
Very wise to carry a spare belt and tensioner when you travel.

Has anyone tried the tensioner with the shock absorber strut? This would surely stop that bouncing.

Yeah but they say you gotta change the aluminum bracket that the accessories and tensioner mount to. Apparently it's a different design.
