thats interesting how they were the same brand but some lasted longer than others?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you were powering it off that charger, its not a fair test. You need to power it off a fully charged starting battery to see how fast it would self destruct in real life.

Yeah I know it was not an accurate test but the other one I did with the charger only went 10 seconds. If I come across any more they will be hooked to battery.

Wouldnt a charger burn them out quicker? If a charger has enough juice to juice up a battery, then I would think it would be able to fry a glow plug faster. Just quick thinking, probably wrong LOL

So then, how many amps do the glow plugs draw? Just out of curiosity...

A GP is only a fraction of an Ohm resistance, so hooking a GP up directly to a battery is pretty close to the same thing as creating a dead short between the two terminals of the battery - for as long as the GP lasts.

Ever seen the sparks that fly when you get a wrench or something metal across the two terminals of a fully charged battery? That's because for all practical intents and purposes a battery will supply as much current as the conductor will take until the conductor burns up or the battery goes dead.

Think a battery charger will make the same kind of fireworks?

For example:
12v battery across .1 Ohms = 120 amps
12v battery across .2 Ohms = 60 amps
12v battery across .5 Ohms = 24 amps
12v battery across 1.0 Ohms = 12 amps

If you watch the YouTube video, that 12 amp charger is pegged the whole time - meaning if it could supply more juice the GP would take it...

So, unless the charger is capable of some pretty high amperage - and a 10-12 amp charger is about as big as most people are going to have unless they own a repair shop - the charger just isn't going to supply enough juice to be the same as a battery.

FYI we have a 40amp max, 20 amp continuous one for our tractors that we use, dont know how much it cost but that thing chargers real nice ;Sweet

I've got a charger with a 60 amp "engine start" setting, but I think that I will use a battery in the event of needing to ruin a GP...

I've got one at work that says it's a 700 amp up to 24 volts. I tested some autolites also. The factory ones burnt out in about 10 to 15 seconds. I got the ones spec'd for a military version Hummer and ran them for about 15 minutes, totally by accident. Got called away at work. The military versions even have the bullet connectors like the 7.3. The civilian versions are the same plug, just have the blade connector. On a side note, the AC60G burnt out also, but the Hummer autolite never did. Threw everything I could at it that it would see inside my engine, and it would pop.
