Forgive my ignorance (that's what I get for only getting 6 hours of sleep last night), but what exactly is it? Offhand, it looks like a vacuum pump and mount for a serpentine belt system, but he's saying that it's for earlier trucks, and then says something about hydraulics?

It's a setup that locates the vacuum pump on a V-belt engine pretty much in the same location as where the serpentine-belt engines have it - kind of on top of the tachometer sender, inboard of where the A/C compressor normally lives. If you have no A/C you use the kit's idler to tension the belt, if you have factory A/C then you skip the kit's idler and use the A/C compressor to tension the belt. Say if you need the space normally occupied by the vacuum pump for something else, this is what you use to relocate the pump. Also the pump as a whole unit does us no good as a replacement for our engines, but it's my understanding that the vacuum diaphragm is identical to ours, as since that's what usually dies this kit would be a way to rebuild your shot vacuum pump for cheap.

I believe it is to run a second vacuum pump for trailer brakes, the type that Midnight Rider perfers. The trailers he pulls use vaccum to actuate the TRAILER brakes, rather than electromagnets and electricity that we are most familiar with. He says they work very well. I have not used this type of brakes, and have no experience. Reminds me of a semi using air for the brakes. The tractor supplys the air, or in this case the vacuum to the trailer. I would not want to run the trailer and truck brakes of the same pump, since if you loose the pump, not only do you loose the assist on the truck, you would loose all brakes on the trailer. With 2 pumps, at least one pump should still work, and one set of brakes would work. I would rather stop the truck and trailer with no power assist on the truck and working trailer brakes, than manual brakes on the truck and no brakes on the trailer....

Agreed, especially since the seller mentions it's for a hot-shot truck and it's a trailer place that normally sells those.

Yes it's for vacuum controlled trailer brakes. This kit gives you an ADDITIONAL vacuum pump, not a replacement of the original. Your original pump stays intact to run the truck, as this kit is for the trailer. Like he mentioned in the ad, a "valveing and fitting kit" would be neccessary for the system.

Yes, what I meant is that since most of us don't run vacuum-brakes trailers we could use this setup to relocate the pump (for whatever reasons), or use the diaphragm off the one in the lit to rebuild our factory pump if it's getting weak.
